I reply to my own post! It got worse and more research on this site gave me the answer. It was the electric fuel pump that was failing. Genuine OEM one got hold of for £137, jobs a good one

Hi all, I have an 06 plate Freelander 1 TDV 4. 107K on the clock. Recently I have had trouble with bad starting / clouds of diesel smoke. I had a set of injectors off a previously deceased FL which I got overhauled. Once they were installed the running and starting got far better, no more...
