Transfer box questions 95 110 tdi

So, can you get away with changing just the front one? I guess the seal surface on the flange gets grooved too.

Transfer box questions 95 110 tdi

Hi, Please forgive me if this has been done to death before. I have quite a bit of vertical play on the transfer box front prop flange. U/Js are good. The steering is tingly at certain speeds and there is a dribble from the oil seal too. It would seem the front bearing/ oil seal has had it. My...

    Transmission clonks

I really need to pluck up courage and lay under it while a helper takes up the play. Suspect it is a series of worn bits adding up. It does tingle at 50 more noticeably now though, and wiggles at the back, despite no great play being found with levers etc. Jim.

All makes sense, thanks for your reply. Jim.

    Transmission clonks

OK, I know they are crude 1940s bits of kit, but my 110 has started to get extra clonky of late. There seems to be a fair bit of backlash on the rear axle(Salisbury). Is this normal? or do the halfshaft splines wear. Add to that some vertical play in the front transfer box output flange and it...

300tdi long crank time before starting

Thanks for the advice. Turned out to be a crusty tank unit with a cracked plastic pipe. Now starts easily with a happy puff of black smoke like a proper car should. Jim.

300tdi long crank time before starting

Done last year, but due soon. Also noticed vague surging when idling and hot, worse when tank level drops. Modern electronic diesels don't like warm fuel, but one of these old girls should be ok, surely? Airleaks do seem the thing.

300tdi long crank time before starting

Spill pipes look OK but new ones on order regardless. Thanks for the advice. Jim.

300tdi long crank time before starting

Despite trying a new set of glow plugs, the Defender is getting hard to start. Twenty seconds of cranking is not unusual, followed by the usual puff of black smoke. Once started performance is normal. Any ideas, chaps? Cheers, Jim.

    Front centre seat belts

Not too happy with the lap belt for my son when he is in the front centre seat. I have a new 5 point harness which was made obsolete for oval racing.2" webbing like normal seatbelt and a quick release aircraft buckle. In red. Anyone fitted a five point? the front crotch/lap strap looks to be...

    A frame ball joint hints?

Thanks, I've seen these on Ebay. Does seem a good move , rather than immobilising the car and taking the joint to work to press it out. Which make did you use? Hear mixed things about Britpart. Is Lemsforder ok? Best regards, Jim.

    The defender club wave

Perhaps what you see as a wave is in fact the poor unfortunate driver trying to get some circulation going in his frozen hand, or trying to demist the screen? As someone else suggested, it is a sympathy thing. Bit like riding a British bike.. I wave, often don't get a reply though (shiny and new...

    A frame ball joint hints?

Noticed a bit of play in the top balljoint on the axle of my 110. Plus a clonk on taking up drive (OK, its a Landrover, I know...) Are these a bit nasty to do? It all looks seriously crusty and like it has been there since 1995. Also guessing buy a genuine joint if possible? There is quite a...

    Over 30 = MOT exempt...new EU directive!

"Substantial change "is the worrying bit. I'm also into Hotrods and messing with old cars in general. This sort of EU directive is not good news if you want to drive, say, a Ford Pop with a v8 in it, or even a Series Landrover fitted with a modern engine and on coils, or even if you fit a...

    Black smoke on starting

My 300tdi was run off the highway for much of its life (Airport, airside). I suspect it was run on red for most of that. I drained the tank and changed filters etc last summer, but it still gives a mighty impressive puff the magic dragon waft of black smoke on starting. It has been run on...

    Over 30 = MOT exempt...new EU directive!

A friend of ours has a WW2 howitzer and tows it with a WW2 lorry. Both pre 60 obviously.. The lorry is MOT exempt, the gun is classed as a trailer and is tested. Pretty crazy really. Surely, if it goes on a public road, it needs testing. If not by MOT, at least by a recognised internal...

    Over 30 = MOT exempt...new EU directive!

The classic status thing is two edged. A way of separating old vehicles from the norm, then restricting their use due to alleged safety or environmental issues. Of course a Clio is safer than a Mini or a Series 3, but if you want to drive a Mini or Landrover everyday it should be your choice...

    Over 30 = MOT exempt...new EU directive!

No No No, as a famous lady once said. It is often asked "What effect does the EU have on your work or daily life" I am an MOT tester and find it worrying that Brussels law is being imposed on us. MOT changes are being implemented due to edicts from the EU, not out of some benign British...
