I removed mine when the car was 4 years old ad covered around 50k and the strainer was clean. When refitting dont slide the rubber sealing ring around the pump/sender unit as it wont fit back in, instead place the sealing ring into the tank aperture then slide in the unit and it will fit fine.

On the facelift models access to the front to bolts is not as easy, I remove the 2 screws each side holding the ends of the front bumper in place this gives a bit more access then use an air ratchet on the bolts but it can be done using a slim ratchet.

A duff water pump when new is not unknown - I fitted a new pump to my MGF and it leaked quite badly after only a few weeks so worth checking even if it's been replaced :)
