    Non starter

Does it run rough when it starts? When you try and start the engine - does it help if you put your foot on the accelerator? Thinking maybe faulty coolant temp sensor - making the ECU think the engine is hot when its cold or faulty IACV (idle air control valve) stuck closed - this opens when...

    '98 Freelander Problems, Lots of.

Its more common for the sliders to stick or even sometimes old pads sticking slightly on the retaining springs but I have also had spilt dust seals on another car (not a Freelander) causing the piston to seize in the bore :)

    Drivers door central lock

Yes, take off the door card and that gives access to the exterior handle bolts, remove these and unclip the accutating rod from the handle then lift out the handle watching that the locking barrel doesnt fall! This gives great access to replace the latch mechanism - easy to do once you get into...

    Handbrake cable snapped

I always tended to leave my cars in gear, never fully trusting the handbrake cables but kind of got out of the habit due to moans from the wife finding the car in gear

    Handbrake cable snapped

I got into the car after work tonight, started up and released the handbrake but it didnt feel right - turns out the LH cable has snapped and the handbrake lever just pulls right up  I am glad I had parked the car on a level space otherwise my Freelander could have rolled into...

    Drivers door central lock

Usually one of the internal solenoids within the lock fails and the usual symptom of locking ok but not unlocking with the fob starts  Only option is to replace the entire latch but its easy enough to fit.

    Big Coolant Leak

Only way to tell for sure is by inspection. Fill up the cooling system and bleed via the 2 bleed screws (one on the heater hose and one below the air box on the metal coolant pipe the wraps round the back of the engine) then run the engine until hot and inspect for signs of leakage. Main leakage...

    freelander td4

Thats what the handbook for my 2005 Freelander states and I have kept them at 30psi for the last 3 years. Interestingly I have noticed more wear in the centre of the tyres.

TD4 - Does it have a filter/strainer in the tank?

I removed mine when the car was 4 years old ad covered around 50k and the strainer was clean. When refitting dont slide the rubber sealing ring around the pump/sender unit as it wont fit back in, instead place the sealing ring into the tank aperture then slide in the unit and it will fit fine.

    Tyres - car or 4 x 4

Thanks - looks like 4x4 tyres are the way to go :)

    Good positive things about freelanders....

I bought a Freelander 1.8 new in 2001 and it was completely reliable in the almost 3 years we had it. My Father in law then bought a year old 1.8 petrol, ran it for 5 years and never had to change so much as a light bulb in all the time he had it. Our main family car is a 2005 TD4 that we have...

    Tyres - car or 4 x 4

Ok so we need new tyres for the Freelander TD4 - searching around for prices some are cheaper but either are specified for a car or have no spec at all in respect of car or 4x4. The car or unspecified ones have the correct speed rating and load index so meet the Land Rover spec but what is the...

    Oil change

On the facelift models access to the front to bolts is not as easy, I remove the 2 screws each side holding the ends of the front bumper in place this gives a bit more access then use an air ratchet on the bolts but it can be done using a slim ratchet.

    burning smell

 I was thinking of the metal coolant pipe on the 1.8 engine that runs around the back of the engine

    interior light help

I had a look at the wiring diagram and if I understand it correctly, the purple live is constant and its the black earth that is switched to control the light, so I think if you connected the earth from your LEDs spliced into the black wire then provided a separate live feed to the LEDs they...

    burning smell

Do the petrol models have a fuel burning heater? Worth checking your coolant hoses are in good condition and no wiring is chaffing against the hot coolant pipes and melting.

    door lock splash guard

Mine did that and wouldnt stay in place so I removed it, you need to take out the exterior door handle and to get access to the 2 bolts that hold it in place you need to remove the door card, also unclip the connecting rod between the door handle and latch then lift out the door handle and the...

    Screeching freelander when starting

Next time it does it have some silicon spray handy and spray the alternator belt, if the noise stops you have found the problem :)

Petrol 2001 intermittent running rough on startup and intermittent misfire mystery

Coil pack was my first thought so worth checking/replacing. Worth also checking your idle air control valve (IACV) in case its sticking open sometimes and making the engine run rough when warm

    Freelander gussling water

A duff water pump when new is not unknown - I fitted a new pump to my MGF and it leaked quite badly after only a few weeks so worth checking even if it's been replaced :)
