Is the drop arm buggered. If not then you can get a kit to do the ball joint.

Gassless mig is about the same as a stick welder. The differences are that the mig feeds its own wire but you struggle to weld thick material. Neither one is easier than the other. Its just what you get used to.

When you practise aim to make it look good. If it looks alright it should be a good weld. But if it looks ****e then thats what the weld will be. Have a look at some tutorials on the web. They helped me alot.

Make sure youget somegood electrodes. As I got some from screwfix the cheapies to pratice with and they are ****. So got some lincoln weld ones.

My 150 amp stick welder runs off the normal mains. Look on machine mart.

Mine did the exact same grinding noise. then started to bang and turned out the cv joint had bust. Check you swivel housings for oil.

I had to replacemy cv joint. Went to Lovell landrovers. I have a 1996 defender and it turns out it has disco axels on it. So find the axel number and give that to the place you are going to get the cv joint from.

He might be on about your swivel bearings. But You can't tell that much by rocking it as the brake calipar and pads limit its movement. If you have time stripp your hub down and have a look. Inspect all the bearings.

Yer you might as well do the wheel bearings yourself. Remember to get Timken ones.

Your best bet will be to make a list of what needs doing to her. Then price it up. Can you weld?
