Just changed cylinder head on a TD5, a few questions

So I've just changed the cylinder head on my TD5 and I've got a few questions before I fire it up. 1. My timing chain tensioner went in without much resistance. Does this mean it needs replacing or is it normal? 2. I've replaced the injector harness but now I can't get the plug to fully...

What liquids for working on a TD5?

Copper grease is a good one. I think I can find those other ones locally and I snuck a load of gearbox oil over in the vehicle when it was shipped. I think two weeks ago I would have been gagging for an order of whisky from the UK but we just managed to get a big £300 order of duty free alcohol...

What liquids for working on a TD5?

:) Good idea, I better check which airline he's with. We've managed it before. As long as it's in the checked luggage and not carry on. The mother-in-law bought a suitcase full of baked beans and HP sauce for us. I'm not asking him to bring a 5L bottle of oil but I think things like Loctite will...

What liquids for working on a TD5?

Sorry for the stupid question but I'm in a hurry. I live in Africa and I struggle to find slightly more unusual bits for working on my TD5. I can get things shipped out from the UK but liquids and powders aren't allowed and getting them here is a massive pain. Like, I need to drive to England...

    Locking the flywheel

Shows how much I know.

    Locking the flywheel

I’m a thicko, I’ve got the email about the reply but I’m not entirely sure what was wrong with the suggestion. I thought it was implying that my flywheel was incorrectly fitted.

    Locking the flywheel

I’m assuming the locking pin is the right size. It’s not something I fabricated, I bought the tool with my new cylinder head from Turner Engineering. Ive looked inside and it just looks like a flat piece of metal. I think I’m just going to put it in gear and go for it now I’ve finally go the...

    Locking the flywheel

So I’m a total amateur who’s trying to change a cylinder head. I’ve found top dead centre, I’ve locked the camshaft. When I crawled under to lock the flywheel there’s no “notch” to lock the flywheel. I’ve got two coloured links on the timing chain with the groove between them what am I doing wrong?

Other jobs to do while changing cylinder head

I'm soon going to be changing the cylinder head on my 10P TD5. I expect this is going to be the most involved thing I've ever done, I've never really touched engines before other than changing a throttle body and spark plugs, but I'm expecting it will be a good opportunity to get some other jobs...

    Powered lowering of suspension

Yes, it does sound like a drastic solution, but it's not a problem I need to fix urgently so I have time to mull it over. Unfortunately we're in a new country for a few years, we don't speak the local language, and the house has been provided so I don't think we'll be popular if we start...

    Powered lowering of suspension

I’m not sure how much I need to lower it right now as I have neither the house nor the Defender to hand and won’t for a few months (it’s complicated). I think it’s just a couple of inches. I do agree that I probably shouldn’t be keeping the roof rack on there but I will need it occasionally for...

    Powered lowering of suspension

I don't mind the "few grand" part but I don't fancy air suspension. I think I might have to get used to getting the roof rack on and off a bit faster. I'd get my wife to help but she's only about 5"2. Maybe if she can get on my two year old daughters shoulders she might be more use.

    Powered lowering of suspension

I'm about to move into a new house and there's a wall around the building with a gate at the entrance. I want to get my 110 inside the gates so it can spend time in it's natural habitat (on axle stands) and I think it may just squeeze in by itself. Unfortunately I also have a Brownchurch HD roof...

    TD5 110 CSW noise reduction?

Putting dynamat all over the place doesn’t do much. It just stops flat panels from creating noise but doesn’t actually block noise coming from the engine, outside, etc. If you’re looking to insulate the cabin follow the instructions on this site (https://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com) but it’s...

    Lightening the pedals

Thanks for all the info. I’m gonna be reading this thread a few times and probably just buying a new throttle pedal ready for when I get my Defender back. I’ll buy myself a LOF clutch kit and look into things to investigate with the brake servo and I’ll throw it onto the pile of jobs that need...

    Lightening the pedals

Thanks for the reply. It’s a County so it does have all the sound deadening stuff and I did have it out to install a load of MLV but I’m 99% sure it’s not causing any issues. Honestly though, it’s not entirely that it’s hard to push down, it’s that it’s trying to push my foot back up. So I...

    Lightening the pedals

The vehicle is a 2000 110 TD5. The accelerator fights me in that it feels like the spring is strong and it takes a lot of effort to push it, it has no problem returning. I’m comparing it to a modern car here. My Qashqai is really light and it’s really easy to press. I would basically say all my...

    Lightening the pedals

So I know about the LOF clutches kit to lighten the clutch pedal so that you can depress it with just one finger. What about the other pedals? My brake and accelerator are still really heavy. I spent about eight hours driving the other weekend and it constantly felt like the accelerator was...

    Brake pipe fittings?

I just had to rebuild most of the pipes in my 2000 110. My advice would be to not cheap out on the flaring kit. I bought a cheaper eBay tool which was like £18 and included flaring and bending tools. My results were so inconsistent in practise that I ended up buying a more expensive one for...
