Economy and how it can be improved

10 to 12 mpg is very low. I have a '95 3.9 auto which is absolutely bog standard and regularly achieve 14-16 mpg in general local use; no long runs involved.

    V8 idling issues!

The V8 engine is particularly sensitive to mismatched or poor quality plug leads and seems to run best on Bosch plugs. My 95 3.9 V8 had copious quantities of injector cleaner poured into it at every service before I bought it and still the idle was poor. Changing the plugs and leads improved...

    Water in Drivers Footwell

I work for a replacement windscreen company and we compile data on the common causes of water ingress on a wide range of models. Invariably, the windscreen installation is blamed as the cause of wet carpets but more often than not the cause is something else. The list below is copied from our...

    Fitting new window rubbers

Early Disco 1 screens were in rubber and are simple and relatively inexpensive to replace. The later screens (like mine, 1995) are direct glazed (glued in/bonded) and whilst straightforward to replace, the top, side and lower trims always needs to be replaced and they are about £140 a set. We...

    Fitting new window rubbers

We replaced the two quarterlight and rear screen rubbers on my Disco 1; they are usually very tight to fit though. Do you have the rubbers already? If not, we could supply and fit at a very sensible price and have branches in Brighton and Crawley. Mail me through my profile if you are interested...

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

Update. I have cleaned and checked all of the connections from the distributor to the coil and amplifier. In doing so I found that the coil and amplifier have both been replaced with Intermotor brand components at some time. There are also two very small black plastic blocks in the wires to...

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

When I got the car last November, the leads were a real mix of different types so I bought a good quality set and replaced the distributor cap with the right one (confirmed by the Bosch specialist). Coil and amplifier sounds like the next best step; is it OK to buy from Paddocks/MM 4x4 or...

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

Famous last words! The problem persisted and so I fitted the spider by pass loom and all seemed well for a few days. However, the non start problem became more frequent so I put the car into a Bosch injection and ignition specialist whilst I went away on holiday asking them to investigate the...

    a frame ball joint

I had the same problem and got someone to put the joint under tension (upwards) whilst I hit the outside of the ball joint socket on the axle very hard with a hammer. The joint popped out within a couple of minutes.

    Window Rubbers

The rear quarterlight rubbers are still available new as I have just fitted both sides and a new rear screen rubber to my five door Discovery 1. The three door rubbers and glass are the same parts. I am in the windscreen business and we obtained the rubbers from one of our normal suppliers, so...

    wheel wobble

I had a similar problem on my Dscovery 1. It was not resolved completely until the radius arm bushes (front and rear), Panhard rod bushes and rear A frame bushes and ball joint were changed. The front radius arm bushes and the Panhard rod bushes resolved the shake but the vehicle still had a...

    passenger footwell full of water!

I have just spent two weeks trying to resolve the water in the footwells on my 95 Disco 1. I stripped the interior of all carpets, underfloor soundproofing, seats, A post kick panels and the under dash panels. Hose on the bottom corners of the windscreen/top of the wings produced lots of water...

A frame joint this may help

All good advice but even with the aid of a twenty ton hydraulic press I could not removed one of the long bolts through the ball joint carrier. The same problem existed with the balljoint removal from the carrier, but this became irrelevant once the long bolt couldn't be moved. £35 for a...

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

Thanks for the advice. I tried all of the suggestions and nothing worked. I rang the local LR dealer and got the origianl key and immobiliser codes and was then able to reset the immobiliser using the driver's door key. All seems well now and it starts with no problem now.

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

What I meant was that the car seems to think that it has been locked with the fob and unlocked with the key. I cannot seem to get things back into order so that it recognises that it has been locked and unlocked with the fob.

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

Perhaps too much information! Under normal circumstances what would be the likely cause of the indicators flashing three times and the dash light flashing rapidly for a few seconds when the car is locked? Would this indicate a fault with the immobiliser or something else? I assume that a...

    Strange Discovery 1 immobiliser problem

Long time lurker on the forum and have found some really useful information, so thanks to everyone. I have a late V8 Disco 1, registered December 95 and need some advice please. I have done a search but the results seem to centre around bypassing the immobiliser rather than addressing the...

    3.9 misfire

I bought a '95 3.9 Discovery a few months ago; the service history showed that it had received copious amounts of injector cleaner each year, presumably to try to cure a low speed misfire and poor cold running but without success. I replaced the full HT lead set with a good quality silicone...
