    200,000 mile club

360k on mine, original engine but it’s had a new gearbox and transfer box, and replacement rear axle. And last year the chassis gave out so I swapped it. But other than that it’s as new :D

Anyone else getting fed up fitting new 'broken parts'

When you consider all this nonsense, genuine parts are suddenly very good value.

Turbo and Intercooler on a Defender 200tdi

Some radial play in the turbo is normal as it’s a floating bearing. It shouldn’t be excessive and definitely shouldn’t allow the vanes to touch the housing. Puff of black smoke on starting is normal as above.

I know this is asked a lot...

It’s perfectly doable - I’ve done 100k in the last three years in mine. I’ll not pretend that a modern pickup or a Disco wouldn’t be more comfortable, but I don’t find any major issues doing 500-600 miles in a day. All comes down to what you like at the end of the day. I’ve had other cars in...

    LT230 Transfer box refurb

Forgive me but just in case you are unaware, there is supposed to be a small amount of radial play in the front output shaft bearing because it’s a non-taper roller unit. If the play gets excessive due to the bearing breaking up then there’s usually a fair oil leak too.

    TD5 90 Project

238/85R16 all the way. Wider tyres look silly and add no traction benefits in the sort of conditions you are talking about. And they will cover the sides of your car with mud.

    How High

High enough for the sills to clear the wheels.

    Decent indicator units.

    They are branded LE Perei.

    Decent indicator units.

LE Perei I had to buy genuine Land Rover ones as I couldn’t find Perei by any aftermarket supplier. Found side lights through Allmakes but not the indicators. They’re not expensive from LR anyway.

    Alignment

Run a piece of string down the line of the curve in all the panels, from the bulkhead right to the back of the tub. That way you can tweak them to your heart's content to ensure that it all lines up. Seen here on my old 88", but same principle for any Defender:

    Hi - Lo selector

Looks like a Disco box to me, judging by the fact that someone’s cut a hole in the seatbox for the levers.

Is my air filter actually doing anything??

I thought those short ones came out of 300Tdis but looking on google perhaps not. I got supplied one in error by a motor factors once and it was labelled as for a 300Tdi Defender. Perhaps there is another application which uses the same design but a shorter cartridge. Either way its too short...

Is my air filter actually doing anything??

Looks like a 300Tdi filter in a 200Tdi housing. The filters are the same design but the 300 version is shorter.

The pipe arrows in the OP’s photo is a clutch pipe, not a brake pipe.

    Imperial brake pipe fittings?

Or maybe 9/16”. Been a while since I had imperial brake lines on mine.

    Imperial brake pipe fittings?

In that case most 3/8” UNF fittings will take a 7/16” AF spanner.
