I keep mine on trickle via a Sealy solar panel. It's not big enough by a long way. So either go for a decent size or as you suggest disconnect battery.

Was thinking of doing this also, the snag i found was that the side panels are angled, so if you cut them down the roof will be narrower than the shortened side panels. If that makes any sense....

As above, I'd guess it was an isolator for something else, that perhaps isn't there anymore - maybe winch? Did the prior owner give any indication? To complete isolate the vehicle would mean a connection in the positive line from the battery. You could confirm this by checking if the main power...
