I had a similar problem, turned out the water pump and seals were shot. Replaced the pump and seals and no more loss of coolant.

I beg to differ about the 2" lift. I changed the tyre size on my D2 which gives a few mm's lift over the OE size. There are one or two lanes that I have bottomed out on (admittedly we had a defender with an expedition camper unit on the back which meant we kept having to stop) due to the ruts...

I voted two inch lift, purely because I don't think 1" is enough of a lift for what I'd like. In terms of options, you could add 4" lift.

I think, like Sue suggested, go to the GLASS website. I do know that the are some nice all season byways around the Cheltenham area of the Cotswolds. If you get in touch with the Gloustershire rep of GLASS, they could probably advise you further, and you would definitely get some nice views.
