Loud cracking noise - rotational with rev's

This is what I'm thinking - the particulate crud on stuff is bits of ground up belt caused by oil falling on it - but theres precious little way of getting leaking oil on there - even if the rocker cover leaks the fan will blow it backwards away from the belt. Now power steering fluid.... if the...

    Turbo-disaster

Having seen what the oil temps are leaving my turbo on a regular road going car, I think letting it cool for 30 seconds of idling is more than sensible. No need to drive it gently for the last mile (although that wont hurt) but the temperature of the bearings was such that I'd be worried about...

Disco 1 ATF - Quick question?

Just wanted to check that you were not using the dipstick after a fill. IF that's what you got out it seems a little high - mine drains a bit more than a gallon can, so I'd say just over 5 litres. 6.6 litres sounds like it was a bit overfilled and coke brown sounds like someones been getting it...

Loud cracking noise - rotational with rev's

Is that oil? Wheres it coming from? And that tensioner looks too far round have you the right belt fitted?

Disco 1 ATF - Quick question?

Umm... if you havent actually run the engine yet how did you measure the oil level....?

Loud cracking noise - rotational with rev's

Before you junk the old tensioner, remove the pulley wheel and bearing (remember its a wrong way thread that bolt..) The bearing inside the pulley is known to fail sometimes and a spare is always handy...

Loud cracking noise - rotational with rev's

This is very true - I use a breaker bar to move mine back it would be quite tricky with a regular 15mm spanner...

Loud cracking noise - rotational with rev's

IF the tensioner has jammed so the tension is wrong and very high, could we be looking at other problems with overloaded bearings in things like the PAS pump and so forth? Might be worth checking them as well I'm thinking...

    Automatic engine?

They are then very early autos they made some without EDC. In which case - it's the same engine as a manual with a kickdown cable. Still no excuse for an eight hour pump swap and subsequent screwup.

    Automatic engine?

Oh and with the proper service tool to hold the crankshaft. I could easily do a timing belt in 2 hours in the desert let alone a proper garage!

    Automatic engine?

Im not sure. The two pumps are noticeably different in appearance however.

    Automatic engine?

The auto pump is different to the manual - as are the injection pipes and the actual injectors themselves. Engines fitted to automatic Disco 1's are 122bhp rather than the manual 111bhp. This is to compensate for the power loss in the slushbox. Also the automatics have a fly by wire electronic...

Disco 1 300TDI Alternator missing regulator?

That's a bodge and a half by the looks of it - you can buy a new regulator for about £25 but I'd just send it back. The whole thing just looks knackered.

    Not running right

That'll be because of the masses of air now in the system... HAve you fiddled with the fuel filter? If no leave well alone and do the following. Slacken the return banjo on the back of the injection pump. Crank till it spurts diesel and nip it up again. If it still wont start crack the...

    Tdi300 Diesel Injectors

Auto or manual engine - I presume a manual unless someone got very creative but you never know.... It depends entirely on service conditions but I would suspect from 100k onwards is when you start thinking about it. You can buy new injectors for manuals, or rebuild yourself there are a few...

    Low oil presure when hot

I ran an oil analysis when I got back, the viscosity and TBN were well within spec - the oil should be good for at least 10k looking at it. From what I can tell the oil thermostat appears to be stuffed and doesn't open at all - I've got a spare one here I just need to pull them both out and...

    Series 3 No brakes

IF you are not losing fluid then I'd tend to have a look at the flexible hoses and check they are not ballooning. I've had that before on a car - it blew the hose up with no pressure at the wheels at all. Otherwise I'd then be looking at the master cylinder as my next port of call.

    CB antenna advice please!

They look familiar. Digging throung my collection it turns out that the one I used for a 3cm down convertor was in fact the one that looks like a giant shaver with the angled top. I've got bits of at least two PF2 and no idea what that was built into! Somewhere there is still an unmodified PF1...
