    P38 4.0 GEMS 1997 - exhaust gas in coolant

Overheated when silicone rubber swarf blocked the radiator bleed pipe. Now RELD test shows exhaust gas in coolant. Radiator needs bleeding after use. No oil in coolant and no coolant in oil. This movie was taken under the car, cold engine, in my garage. Any opinions if one or more liners is...

    P38 exhaust

It’s broken so you should fix it. That’s not your car, you are just looking after it for the next generation.

Perhaps you could visit a custom exhaust builder, like Powerflow, and get a stainless system fitted. You can tell them the noise level, eg “mild sporty” or “quiet”, and choose from a selection of tailpipes. I have used them in the past, they are really good.

Same here - leak at top right corner of condenser. New condenser, problem solved. (That's top right when viewed from driver's seat, as per standard JLR procedure.)

What Should I be Looking for on a 2000 P38A

IMHO that is a very accurate assessment, clearly based on long experience and accurate diagnosis. A P38 will arrive with problems, and will generate new challenges as you proceed to fix the existing ones. It can create faults while locked up overnight in a climate-controlled garage. Most P38s...

P38A Can anyone identify these parts.

Correct - for the non-matelots, remember that "there is always a bit of PORT LEFT in the bottle".

Er, yes. Lies and clever photography. But basically a sound car. Good bones.

Interesting comments and very much along the lines of my life-plan. I am a bit ahead of you age-wise, and also prefer to mess about doing the peripheral stuff, not welding the chassis and replacing the differentials etc. I got a Japanese import "superb rust-free example" as Kristian at...

Booked in to V8 Developments on 1 September... Very comforting and confidence-inspiring chat just now. Then I'll find out just how expensive it is to have bits of silicone sealant swarf swimming about in the cooling system. :-(

90k miles on the engine… I am 76, so considerably more mileage than my P38. Garages seem less than keen to do it - I think they like servicing newer cars. Might well end up doing it.

The temp gauge shot up and red light came on, but it didn’t lose all its water - I think about 2-3 litres was dumped. No steam gushing either. Fingers crossed…!

Not such a good outcome on my P38 cooling system - overheated when some silicone sealant (that invention of the devil) blocked up the rad bleed pipe at the header tank end. Blockage cleared and system refilled, but now it defo has exhaust gas in it. The RELD blue dye test indicated gas, and the...

Looks like you just saved me twenty quid - thank you!

That looks exactly like the kit I had, but cheaper and with a different maker's name. The green adapter is supposed to fit, but is far too wide in the stem. The pink one nearly fits, but not quite. Have you got one of these kits?

Funny stuff, water. Expands when above 3C, and also when below 3C, and of course even more when turning solid. So the top of a frozen lake is floating ice, and the lowest level of water at the bottom of the lake is the densest at +3C. Fortunately this gives fish somewhere to survive, albeit...

Is an engine replacement in a 4.6 P38 a complicated job?

Silverline pressure test kit - fell at the first - the "Land Rover" adapter doesn't fit, nor does any other one in the kit. Back to Amazon it goes. Anyone know of a kit that actually fits a P38? Also, a question on the header tank level. If I cold-fill to the "Cold Level" mark, when hot it rises...

Like this Silverline one? For £78, seems like a useful kit to have. Amazon has some cheaper ones with Chinese names, but at least I have heard of (and used) Silverline before...

This stuff? The reviews on Amazon show around 25% of users had problems with it, or it didn't work for them. But you must be in the 75% that found it fixed the problem, at least for a while. Also: https://www.v8developments.co.uk - these people? Looks like a very useful operation - thanks for...
