The starter usually causes a cranking but no start situation because it sufferes from internal arcing.These sparks send nasty spikes back up the main feed cable,they are strong enough to corrupt the crank sensor signal and confuse the engine ecu.

The cam belt is actually an easy job,as said its the fuel pump belt at the rear of the engine that is the problem.On D3/RRS its not timed so apart from being a bit tight and a skin rasher,its all doable.The 3ltr D4 engine fuel pump belt IS timed and is possibly more of a problem.(Not had to do...

Might be an idea to look at the fuel pipe coming out of the top of the fuel tank,they often rust through allowing air to get sucked in.

If its obvious where the gasket has failed,but the head is still flat there is no need to skim or pressure test it.Get it all clean,have the valves out and lap if needed,new stem seals and reassemble.I would avoid the multilayer type gasket that LR now supply,I've had problems with oil leaks...

Are the rockers and shafts new ?

My apologies - I was clearly wrong. I was just bitching because all I've really seen of LR since Tata took over is large price hikes on parts that are often of poor quality etc,not doing much for LR's rufty tufty image...

A dwell meter is the only proper way to set up the points on a V8 Rover,and good luck in finding decent points and condensors - it was hard enough 30 years ago....
