More Power - How far can you go?

Thanks - Id happily say that my standard V8 manual is a lot quicker than an alive tuning 190hp TD5 defender 110, I know because Ive tested it, drag racing on a beach. Both with KO2 AT tyres, although mine was on 235/70r16 and the 110 had 235/85r16, but then the transfer gearing sort of makes up...

More Power - How far can you go?

Yeah, Im quite happy to change the turbo, Id just like to know how much boost/power I can expect the engine to cope with. If Im going to hate driving it because its got no power, no matter what mods I do, then Ill stick with the V8, and see if theres anything I can do to make it use less fuel.

More Power - How far can you go?

This was my thought exactly when I bought the V8, especially when at the time it was almost £600 cheaper to insure the V8 than in was the diesel, and there was an LPG station near me, and at the tipe petrol was 104.9p/L because covid. But within a year, I was paying over £1.90/L, and it was...

More Power - How far can you go?

Okay, answering my own question, but Id still appreciate peoples best guesses as to an actual BHP figure. So heres what to do - Get a standard 300tdi, and make sure its in good condition, fresh coolant, of the correct type, mixed in the correct ratio, no blocked radiators, not obstructed by any...

    300Tdi twin inlet

Ive got a discovery. But theyre all basically the same, and the 1970 RRC had 135hp, which is more than any standard diesel defender ever had. Its all about driving them conservatively. Probably so many defenders crashed because people bought them as fashion statements and drove them like cars...

No, but occasional heavy towing on steep hills, etc. Also obviously being quicker than your mates is also cool.

    300Tdi twin inlet

Thats double what I got from the V8. What breaks on the 300tdi if its pushed too hard? Presumably the headgasket? Or does it run out of fuelpump and run too lean and melt a piston? And how hard has it got to be pushed to do that?

    300Tdi twin inlet

Sounds good, I took a standard 300tdi for a testdrive, coming from a 3.9 V8 manual and it was unbelievably bad, but then having looked into it further, its probably easier to get a 300tdi to make 180hp than it is to get the V8 to do 25mpg!

    300Tdi twin inlet

Have you any guess as to how much power its making in this state of tune? How does it compare to a standard TDI and/or a standard 3.9 V8? Also just my 2p as a mechanical engineering student (so not actually qualified) - Some here seem confused between flow and pressure and "amount" of air. The...

1.) I dont really want a defender 2.) I dont have £17,000 Ill have a look at my manual one soon just in case I need to pinch a few bits, then Ill let you know. I paid £555.55 for it, and about £100 for delivery (got it from the same town the second garage, the supposed LR specialist was, so...

More Power - How far can you go?

So having owned a 3.9 V8 Discovery 1 for a while, and having fed it petrol every 300 miles (if Im lucky) and having had its electronics completely break, I went and had a look for a 300tdi instead. I found one not too far from me, and went to have a test drive. I knew it wouldnt be as quick as...

Mad LWB disco idea (Now ultimate overlanding disco thread of rubbish

A truck cab with a hicap tub is much more useful than a disco without any seats in it. If I had a hicap Id make some kind of demountable camper, although probably not the traditional kind that looks like a caravan dropped from a helicopter with great accuracy, it would probably be a plastic...

Mad LWB disco idea (Now ultimate overlanding disco thread of rubbish

I did, its ever so slightly too short, without tilting/sliding the front seat. Also it means turning a 7 seater into a 2 seater without gaining much versatility. I had planned on putting drawers under the 6th and 7th seats permenantly, with some kind of "lid" I could put over them which would...

Shh we dont talk about that Its not just the sleeping room, Im quite happy with a ground tent most of the time, and when Im not, I can make do with the rear seats or whatever. This thread became quite theoretical and pointless a very long time ago, because its really about what is ideal or...

Ive not got a computer right now, just a mobile phone, and its a 300+ page document. Also, Im thoroughly of the D1 superiority disposition. I really like my disco, as much as it tries to bankrupt me. Its just not quite big enough, if it had a few more inches in its wheelbase, and those inches...

Bobtails dont need an IVA iirc, because you are allowed to modify the chassis outside the wheelbase. Or at least that was the case last time I checked. Whats wrong with a defender? Everyone whos ever been in one knows. Theres no shoulder room, the windscreen is so low youve got to crane your...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Okay - V8 D1 owner here. Mines a 3.9 manual, but anyway. Power - excellent. Will blow any 300tdi out of the water, even a modified one, and even if you fill your boot with lead. And it makes more torque than a 300tdi, and the clutch is much lighter. Also because of the gearing etc, its a much...

Ohh how I wish you were correct. See other thread "its still broken" I wish I hadnt bought that one, specifically because its the 3.9 V8. At the time, petrol was £1.04/L because covid. Then petrol went through the roof, and it was costing me 70p/mile in petrol at one point. Then it broke ina an...
