Bubbles in the coolant usually point to a head gasket, but it could be that it's air locked. Try opening the cab heater to hot and raising the front of the engine up..on stands or facing up hill. Then add coolant really slowly, when the engine is cold.

Sorry, I can't help with you enquiry, but I know that you need to use GL4 gear oil in certain gear boxes. GL5 attacks certain bronze fittings. But you're talking about the engine.

If that's the same shaft that I had to free off, I managed to get a spanner on the flat part that goes to the arm that points down. I was able to fode it with release fluid and slowly got it freed off. It was under the plate that the high-low lever goes into.

My D1 has never had the hi lo used, I removed the gaiter and found the shart had seized. Plenty of release fluid and grease and it's working fine now.
