I must admit, I only rotated the prop flange, it just seemed an excessive amount of rotation... must be 10 degrees?

I'm Coming towards the end of my front axle rebuild on my s3, and would like thoughts on the following. it's had new brake pads fitted and I've used the adjuster to close up the shoes but when I fit the brake drum I find that the drum is rubbing on each end of the pad. I notice the originals...

So, I've managed to get the long half shaft in, except it's now in so tight I can't pull it out again It all rotates properly but there's no In and out movement, unlike on the short shaft I'm able to push and pull approx 5mm and it's seems quite free . One side obviously isn't right..... front...
