Hi, sorry for the late reply, its just been one of those weeks and i havnt checked the forum for a while. yeah the range is still out of action due to the brakes playing up and it would be really good if you could possibly point me in the right direction. did you see the thread i started about...

:D:D ahahahahaha but seriously.. you can tell something about whining noises by what conditions the car is under when it happens, eg power on, overrun, coasting etc and you can sometimes hear whether its coming from the front or back of the car. a lot of it is guess work though

well, i am no longer insured to drive my range rover =( at least driving my little french boring mobile will free up some money so i can throw some at the rangie =/

mines a 1990 Vogue SE. the only lights i have when the ignition is on are the battery light, engine oil light, and the parking brake light (this never goes out, dodgy sensor i think) and the pad wear light (im assming thats what it is) only comes on when you crank it, then goes out as soon as...

actually thinking about it there is a light that comes on when i crank the engine then goes out again when it fires (doesnt come on with the ignition though, only when i actually crank it); its an orange one showing a circle surrounded by another ring of dashes, which i guess would be pad wear...

yeah that looks like a pretty good investment. im not sure whether to chance it with driving the car now, because it didnt come up with any warning lights when the brakes failed this time, im slightly concerned that they could fail again without warning. i was just lucky that i was travelling...

thanks for the replies, but it seems to have started working again =/ seems its doing what late 80's and early 90's british cars are best at... intermittent electrical faults... if (when) it fails again i will try what you said above and hopefully find the source of the problem. thanks again, Tom

my 3.9 range is getting around 16mpg average which is a bit poor as most of my time is spend on A roads just trundling along, although i do live in the bottom of a valley so every time i use it i have to make the old girl climb up out of the valley before she gets a chance to fully warm up :(

i measured it at the plug right next to the pump itself under the bonnet (the power leads that is, not the multiplug that plugs directly into the pump unit) and oddly i didnt get any warning lights at all on the dash =/
