Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

Yes, I was looking at it earlier, and wondered if it was worth applying a bit of blunt force, but then decided to wait for the Plusgas to arrive, give it a bit of a soak....and then resort to physical violence!

Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

Just realised I had already posted one image of the unit yesterday (1528hrs) but here is a reverse view.....

Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

Strange one. I have found half a dozen online....all show the ' cover plate' firmly attached the rest of the unit. I'll post a picture tonight. As for a second hand handle. ..they aren't cheap either and I've not found one that comes with a key yet....which is where this story began! Assuming...

Well, every day's a school day I guess. PlusGas duly ordered.

TBH I have had to Google that....is it really any better than WD40 ?

I've found a replacement plunger a 'bit' cheaper, but it's still £70 !! Yup, more WD40 and even more patience I reckon.

Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

Just found this plunger unit on John Craddock's website (good job I'm sitting down already)...for £162 o_O https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/390982-plunger-unit-top-tailgate-rrover-classic.html Looks like this 'gasket' is actually part and parcel of the main unit!!

Hi. The shaft you can see is the plunger that is activated by the Chrome push button. This moves freely in and out and doesn't inhibit this 'gasket' in any way.

Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

So, I removed the handle this morning, located the small cover plate and undid the two retaining screws. I then left it soaking in WD40. On the assumption that the cover plate was made of something reasonably substantial (like....oh, I dunno....steel maybe?) I have just tried to gently lever it...

Ideal, thanks. I only re-fitted the handle a few weeks ago.....must have missed the cover plate, duh!

Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

Yes, that's what I'm assuming as well. I also have a '72 RRC (albeit with a shell from the 80's) which has exactly that.

Classic Has anyone changed a RRC upper tailgate barrel?

Hi, The restoration of my 1980 RRC 2 door is nearly complete. I need to replace the barrel on my upper tailgate (unless anyone knows a way of sourcing a key for it!), but I can't see an obvious way of removing the old one from the handle. Any ideas? Cheers.

Classic Work around for a 2 Door Range Rover window lift channel anyone?

Ah! Good point. Apologies, I'll see if I can drop the passenger side this weekend.

Classic Work around for a 2 Door Range Rover window lift channel anyone?

Thanks for the reply but, unfortunately, half of the channel has fallen off and looks like something recovered from the Mary Rose; the remainder is (presumably) still attached to the bottom of the glass. The car is in daily use so I don't want to risk dropping the glass out to recover the...

How to: lower the manual drivers seat in a RR Classic?

Slightly off-piste, but I replaced the two (totally knackered) front seats of my 2 Door Rangie, with a set from a BMW Cabriolet (selected for their built-in seat belts). Took a bit of cutting, grinding and welding but they went in and are way more comfortable than the originals. In short: it's...

Classic Work around for a 2 Door Range Rover window lift channel anyone?

Hi, My driver's side window lift channel decided to deposit half of itself in the bottom of my door a couple of weeks ago......I'm assuming the remainder is still attached to the glass. The window is now firmly secured in place by Her Majesty's finest black gaffer tape, but I can't find a...
