    Engine noise driving me nuts

Thanks. So if I take the head off and look at the roller/brass followers, I should see one that is obviously different or could it be the cam lobe that is damaged. The ends of the pushrods were not smooth as I remember. What can be replaced here as the rocker/valve/pushrod and brass follower are...

    Engine noise driving me nuts

Thanks for your replies. I'd describe it as a heavy ticking - I get funny looks from people when I'm driving along its so loud. The 'tick' is happening once per cycle/ 1/2 crank speed or cam speed but I guess this could still be big end on power stroke? There is no noticeable side/twist...

    Engine noise driving me nuts

Any help with this one? I have a 2.5 n/a which started making quite a loud noise. Checked oil and noticed it was blow min (no light on) Anyway, topped up with oil and the noise is still there. Initiually thought it would be big ends/mains worn due to lack of oil but I now think its coming from...

    2.5 n/a diesel intermittent power

I know this is a bit old but thought i'd post my findings. It ended up being the fuel filter (which was only a few months old) The filter was very badly clogged and this was traced back to the fuel tank having an inch of mudd at the bottom - caused by a massive hole in the rusted fuel filler...

    2.5 n/a diesel intermittent power

thanks, I gave the connector a tighten/clean. Can these solenoids fail inside?

    2.5 n/a diesel intermittent power

Hi, where do I start with this on please. Intermittent power loss (maybe a second or so) when driving - appears worse at higher revs. Feels like complete fuel starvation. Also, during idle, it can happen and engine will be cut. I have blown through fuel line from lift pump to tank. No difference...

    Door Hinge Tool

Hi, I know getting the hinges off can be tricky but can anyone recommend an online supplier of a pozi #4 bit with a 1/2 socket so I can use an impact wrench? I'd like to replace these fasteners and stop the door sagging and possibly replace the hinges. Also, is there any use in drilling some...

    driving technique

Hard to say but i'd say it goes up 5 or 6 feet in say 15 feet at the steepest. Its tarmac. Bearing in mind my tyres are hopeless in the snow/ice 245/70/16's or something close and have to cope with with a 40 mile daily commute. Just out of interest - what will happen with and engine forced to...

    driving technique

There is about 10 feet where I can't hold it on the brakes. I just need enough momentum to get past this point and round but not too much that I end up in the kitchen. It takes a few goes to guage the right speed. Thanks for all your replies. I have some ideas. jeremy

    driving technique

I knew that was coming! Its such a short run and I dont want to park it on the road in case someone ploughs into it with all this ice.

    driving technique

Hi lifechooser, the problem is its so steep I have to take a run at it - if i only get half way up it wont hold on the brakes and the only thing stopping it sliding backwards is the drive to the spinning wheels. I think your second options sounds the best but do I need to start the engine again...

    driving technique

Ok goonarmy, will have another go at doing the falling down the slope while I engage the clutch for reverse. The problem I have with that is there is so much transmission backlash and suspension movement it appears to unsettle the car more. I thought perhaps stalling and just use engine braking...

    driving technique

Thanks, I'll try 2nd gear but dont want to go too fast and slide sidways into the posts (about 2 feet either side). There is a turn at the top and if I miss that I'll be in the kitchen. Not sure I'd be confident of going up in reverse at speed and I'll still have the same problem of sliding...

    driving technique

Not sure where to put this... In this snow I have difficulty getting up my drive (its a 90)and was wondering the best way to do this. Its about 30feet long, flat on the top and I take a bit of a run at it. Normally I would select diff lock, 1st gear and see how far I get up, when I loose...

Can you adjust the 'play' in a 90 steering box?

Sorry to hijack this thread. I got a recon steering box 12 months ago and I have never been able to adjust all the backlash out. Its quite bad - maybe 6 to 8 inches of steering wheel travel. I have adjusted the 'adjusting nut' until it feels like its gone as far as it can. The play is definitely...

    Aluminium restoration

Hi, I'm doing a cheap and cheerful rolling restoration of a 90 and I have a number of areas on the body (bottom of rear door) where the aluminium corrosion is so severe I can poke a screwdriver through to the door frame. Whats the best way to deal with this? I'm only really trying to...

    Steering box special tool

I have a recon 3 bolt steering box and has a leak from the steering box/pump union on the steering box. This is really hard to get to to tighten fully. Is there a tool I could get to make this easier - I dont want to take the steering box off again just to tighten this joint? Any Ideas...

    Chassis replacement

Those pictures are ace - it does look more like a restoration project than a fix so its probably going to have to wait until I have the use of a 2nd car and take it off the road for a few months. In the mean time - whats the name of the cross member near the rear shock mountings? Mines rusted to...

    Chassis replacement

Thanks for that - the more photos the better. Is it the shell/tub that causes most of the problems? How heavy is it? How much of the hard work involved could be done while the car is being used as a daily commute ie sorting out seized bolts/ rotten brackets etc. Does the Haynes manual describe a...

    Chassis replacement

I'm looking into doing this as my chassis is in a terrible state. Its a C plate 90 2.5N/A and never been waxoyled. Are there any publications that describe whats involved and does anyone have any job lists/advice. I will have to dismantle the body as have no way of lifting high or use of any...
