Newby question - how to buy a rust free Disco?

It depends how much you are prepared to pay! I've just been looking through a magazine, and there are specialists selling really good 300s, but they can be pricey. If you do buy from a specialist, you get new cambelt, service etc, and you can give it a really good inspection and test drive.

    Advise for the new boy!

It's really a case of what you want. Both models have good and ad points. I had a 51 plate ES td5, a lovely car with all the toys etc, could pull anything. The only real problems i had with it was the air suspension. I now have a 96 tdi 300, still pulls anything, but no toys! 5 grand would get...

Fuel gauge gone a bit mad

The sender unit is easy to get at, just lift up the carpet in the boot, there is a plate held down to the boot floor with screws (these can be a bit difficult to get out). Take the plate off and you'll see the top off the sender. There are 2 fuel lines and a small plug, undo these, then take off...

Fuel gauge gone a bit mad

If you take out the sender unit you might see a small bare wire, it's on the moving swing part . this can come away and need soldering. This caused the same problems on my disco. It's easy to spot and sort out and can save you money.

Newby question - how to buy a rust free Disco?

Like some of the poster have said, it will be hard to find a perfect one. Get some help from someone in the know and look at a few (there are still plenty 300s around). Don't be afraid to lift the carpets etc. Ideally you want to get one from an enthusiast who has really looked after it, but...

Newby question - how to buy a rust free Disco?

I bought my 300 tdi (p reg) off ebay for a grand, was expecting a right **** tip! Its got 197k on the clock and pulls really well. The chassis is good and there is only slight surface rust on the boot floor, there is some bubbling on the bodywork, but nothing to worry about. I've only had to do...

Buying a 1999 Land Rover Discovery II

Looks ok! Must be worth going to see at that price. Plenty of money left to sort out any jobs. If the air suspension is o its way out, you could convert it to coils.

    cambelt kit 300tdi disco

foundry 4X4 do a kit for the 300tdi for 35 quid. It'll be a britpart item, they are as good as the genuine items in my opinion.

    bushes kits

Hi. Britpart do a black kit. These give a similar ride to standard ones, and are easier to fit than the yellow ones. They are still poly, so last well etc. I think foundry 4x4 do them.

    Hiclone...Any good?????

I was at Newark on Saturday, got taking to a guy about these Hiclone things. Has anyone got one fitted? Do they make a difference to performance etc? They seem a bit pricey for such a simple device.

    Disovery Mpi

At 18, you might be better off with (dare i say it?) a freelander. A diesel one ofcourse. I know they're not ideal, but it would be a better alternative to a disco mpi. And they do look the part, and if you go for the 5 door you get plenty of space.

though i would make you giggle.

I decided to go for it! I was just gonna watch, but my wife talked me into it. I just spent all saturday valeting it (total waste of time). Got stuck 3 times, in a big way. My difflock got stuck on! Had to spend all monday freeing the difflock linkages, and cleaning it again! Kids enjoyed it though!

though i would make you giggle.

Brilliant! I was there sunday before last, and it was really bad. Everyone was getting stuck out there. The tractor was busy all day.

    300tdi miles per gallon

Hi. I'm reading this post with interest. I have hd my 300 TDI 96plate, manual, for 3 weeks now. It's got the big tyres (not sure of the size at the moment). I have yet to service it (i'll get the stuff from newark this weekend), and it still has the egr, and "cat" in place. It done 200k. I have...

    Missing Spider ????

I had the dreaded spider problem 2 weeks ago. The difference is,my disco didn't turn over at all. I had the spider re soldered by a bloke who does lr diagnostics etc, and it seems to have done the trick. I suspect yours is a different problem as your engine turns over. Landrover did stop using...

The haynes manual states every year or 12k, but on older models i would do it every time i change the oil etc.

    Discovery series 2

If you budget will get you a 2003 model, this is the way to go. Landrover went to town on these later models, as the new one was due out. As you said earlier, look for a full landrover history 1 owner model. And check everything including the air suspensio (you should be able to lower it fro the...

    Discovery series 2

I bought a TD5 es from a dealer, paid a bit more for it, but it came with a 6 month warranty. Air spring were needed after a couple of weeks, rocker gasket was leaking and there were electrical problems (all done under warranty thankfully). I sold it a year ago, and now have a 300tdi. You might...

    New user, soo many questions.

When you lock the car, you should hear the actuator in the rear door. If you can, it's the spring in the door latch, About a fiver off ebay. The rear door is the easiest to do. I've just done three doors on my disco, cos it was blody annoying me! Good luck.
