Both engines are built by landrover so there for it follows they have faults that let them down from time to time. this said they can both be very reliable but for me cos my middle name is arkwright I would go with the TD5 that and the fact I get very cheep doosel ;) oh and forget the rangie...

it could be just a bad earth cos this weather will make it worse check your earths make sure they are clean and dry and a good contact. Always best to check these first with n e electrical problem

Well mine current trusty disco has only a mear 125,000 on the clock but the one b 4 that was still been run in at a tad over 280,000 miles can't really comment on what was origanal cos I did change the gear box and 2 diff's on that in the 3 years we had her b 4 she got shunted down a motorway...

is it auto or manual cos if its manual there will be a level plug on the side of the box so ya's need to slide underneath the car and looks up once ya found it undo it on level ground then stick ya finger in and see if it gets oily also you fill it up thorogh this hole and as for draining it...

Check the wiring and switch is where I would start ya never know could be rubbing through somewhere and in long run cause bigger problems

without a little more detail it could be anything from the gearbox its self, transfer box, centre diff, propshaft, or even front or rear diff. is it the same in all gears or just first or is reverse the same as well. are either of the propshafts turning. if one is spinning and not the other...

Take the hoses off the rad then flush it through using your garden hose providing its not frozen solid as for the heater matrix it depends on your car but I always try to find the feed pipes in the engine and use these to flush the heater matrix oh and don't forget to fill it all back up...

Sounds like an earth fault to me somewhere along the line but apart from check yer earths I can't offer owt more sowie

get an oil change on the box to start with as ya oil can cause alot of thouse sorta problems.
