I got a couple of used key fobs from my local breakers, and went to this guy to get them re-programmed while I waited. Elegance lockmasters Mr. Raja 0208 514 3313 / 07930 453650 / Ilford He supplies and programs new fobs, and repairs broken ones too. He charged me £45 for re-programming...

I reckon, that either there was a mis-match of the codes on the back of the fob that you had, and the one you bought from Ebay. Or the fob you bought from Ebay was faulty. As both the used fobs I got worked on my car after re-programming.
