Thanks for the advice all. Much appreciated as ever.
I'll have a look at the UJ's when I get home.
Assuming they are the issue then I think I'll get a new prop shaft including UJ's. Based on the (very sensible) suggestion to get a couple of spares in case I cock up (entirely likely) it makes the...
OK, answered my own second question there with a quick check on Paddocks. Yes, I can get new UJ's and based on comments on here Hardy Spicer are the ones to go for.
Sorry for the "panic" response before checking :)
The first question still stands, can I diagnose the issue without removing the...
Thanks for the suggestion. Yikes.
OK, so a couple of stupid questions.
Firstly, how can I tell if the UJ is going? Is it visible or do I have to remove the props and check the UJ's in some way off the landy?
Secondly, can I get just a new UJ or do I need a new prop shaft if one of them is...
Hi All,
On my way home tonight my landy developed a somewhat worrying clunking noise when first changing gear.
I put her in first to pull away, no noise until I actually engage the clutch and start to move, then I get a clunking noise, which disappears after a second or so. I change into...
One week and 70 miles later and it's looking like a good fix.
No oil seeping from the axles, brakes work, new copper brake pipes (made up and flared myself) and fittings are holding up.
Stupidly pleased with myself :D
Wipac Crystal H4 headlights turned up today...
Think it's time to bite the...
I didn't say the heater works.
As far as I can tell that box by the bulkhead is simply to aid in lateral weight distribution. It doesn't actually DO anything :)
Well, last Thursday saw me ready to get going on this bright and early (11am, damned family getting in the way of the landy ;) ).
I ended up with an assistant (7 years old) who turned out to be a god send in terms of cleaning things up as I figured things out.
By 4pm it was all done bar a test...
You guys are better than you realise. Simply posting on here made me realise what the issue was, or at least what it might be...
"Hmm... I did put those two identical green wires in the fuse box back in the correct places didn't I?"
"Why on earth is the heater connected to the indicator...
Hi All,
I had various parts of my elecrtics go though they would come back on it I bashed the steering column. By a process of elimination I figured out that one element of my fuse box had stopped working, so I moved everything on that element down to the spare one. Sorted. Or so I thought...
On mine there aren't a whole lot of choices.
Have you looked in the Series 3 parts catalogue?
Series 1 2 and 3 workshop and parts catalogue | Landroverweb.com
Might give a better idea.
If not the green LR repair manual has better pictures than the Haynes one I'm sure.
Alternatively, there is a...
I do of course now have one somewhat unseen consequence of doing this. The noises have changed drastically and I can now hear all sorts of things I couldn't before (including the other people shouting within 10ft of her :D)
I now have to re-figure out what noises are OK, what are concerning and...
Yup, so's mine, but there was no mountings for the assembly at all.
Also, my battery tray has no floor to it, meaning I couldn't even put the battery back in there if I wanted to and making mounting it just that little bit more entertaining.
This just raises so many questions...
Is this a stationary ditch or I should be on the look out for rapid moving, malicious, daredevil ditches heading towards me down the road looking for trouble?
A kind of ASBO ditch.
Are we all going to crash into the same ditch (in which case it would have...
Since there are no brackets on my chassis and no obvious "proper" way of attaching it I've manufactured myself a set of mounts based on some angled steel and several bolts through the bodywork for lateral stability. It took almost all day Sunday, but she's all sorted now and she's a damn sight...
The one you linked to looks good. Straight, clean and in pretty good nick.
Looks can be deceptive.
There is relatively little write up on it and it's a private sale.
The pictures are obviously aimed at presenting it in it's best light, but they avoid showing the areas of most potential...
Brake cleaner, available at any Halfords or motor factor, would be the simplest and quickest way. I'd also advocate "reconditioning" the backplate, and anything else, if you've got it all apart.
I'm doing something similar in the near future myself.
Hi All,
I posted a thread on here ages ago about wanting to convert back from the stupidly noisy and pointless K&N style filter I have at the moment and putting the original oil bath one back in place. I need to put the mounting bracket, which is battery and air filter combined, back in since I...
Thanks all. Excellent advice as ever and much appreciated.
Looks like the wife may have scuppered the plans to do the work this weekend, but when I get a pass I'll be sure to take the advice and plenty of pictures of the springs, etc. to aid the rebuild :D
Thanks for the replies.
Hmm... brake pipes... might be worth having some spares as I've yet to remove a pipe on my landy that hasn't twisted and broken.
Damn good point that!
In fact, I might just get myself a coil of pipe, some connectors and a flaring tool. Might make life a lot easier.
Is...
