Yes in a nut shell - the check strap or stay is now loose inside the B pillar of the door. Removing the trim I should be able to see whats happened (when it warms up) - wondering if this is a welded piece or screw in? Door is rarely used and wonder if its seized in the cold and put too much...

agreed, can get em new of £130 or recon at LR dealer. Couple of hours to do yourself. Did mine, couldn't be bother to repeat if my repairs didn't fix it.
