My third gear had gone is the S3 box so looked at a 5 speed but quoted £4-£4.5k for the box and all the work to convert from the standard box so went for the standard box rebuild (£900 fitted with new clutch), which had lasted c30k miles with the V8 fitted. Couldn't justify the cost.

Will I be OK towing a 933kg 5m long caravan with an 1974 S3? Its got a 3500 P6 V8 but worried about braking and the length of the van v truck. Caravan isn't braked as its a 1990 model. Planning on towing it 50 miles to Silverstone Classic at the end of the month. FFG

The garage changed the gaskets/seals/foam bit as it needed a wheel bearing too. They said they'd put EP90 in there so suspect that is what's dribbling out. I'll take it off at the weekend and shove some grease in.

I think this is a better option as it will still allow coolant to bypass the heater matrix and flow around the engine but open the valve to let water flow through the matrix if required. Should fit the existing rubber pipes without to much effort...
