    earth fault... guide to finding?

Driving to work with lights on, then out of the blue all the other lights flickered on; brake, indicators, fog lights etc. The flicker became constant. So i switched off my lights and all was well. When ever i brake, indicate or use the headlights, everything else comes on...sometimes (most of...

    Brakes pulling to side

Potentially, but I am assuming the front as that’s the ones I rebuilt and I never had any issues before, so would be bad luck if the back failed now. I could try with the wood. I was worried that they’d all come out but maybe not with the same force or something.... but I guess that wouldn’t...

    Brakes pulling to side

My front calliper pistons were a bit grotty looking so while rebuilding my hubs and swivels, I decided to replace the pistons with SS version. All seemed to go well with rebuild. I’ve bled the system a couple times, taking out for a spin and bleeding again. I have a pressure vessel system for...

    Track rod end torque

Should be simple - what torque? I’ve read 40Nm, 80Nm and even up to 110Nm! Does it make a difference if it’s a nylock nut or castle nut? To be clear, I’m talking about the bar that connects both swivels together, which is sometimes called the drag link?

    Help swivel/stub axle

Reassembling my hubs, defender 1990. Swivel set up with preload. Greases up bearings on CV and slid half shafts into axle. Full range of motion and they are engaged with diff. On stub axle I replaced the bronze bush- it’s properly seated. Put stub on and torqued bolts up and now toasty ion of...

    Swivel set up

I've been reading more about this and clearly there is a difference on pre-load depending if you have two bearings (top and bottom) or the 'Railko bush' at the top? My defender is a 1990 90 with a Railko bush. I've looked up an older manual that has a Railko bush in teh set up, it talks about...

    Swivel set up

300tdi manual says resistance should be 1.16kg to 1.46kg. From what I understand, that’s without the seal etc. who knows how your supposed to read that accurate when it varies so much during the short pull. I had the choice of apparently zero, or 2.2kg. Depending how I pulled, I got either...

    Swivel set up

Hmm ok. It was a little tighter than I think it should be. Once the seal is fitted is there a new ‘measurement’ I can take? I’m thinking I should go back and take out the thinnest shim....

    Swivel set up

Setting up the top pin on my swivel. I am down to a point where is it loose and will swing back and forth, or I add the thinnest shin and it then feels a little too tight. Input a baggage weight scale thing on and initially it says 2.2kg but then backs off as it starts moving. obviously 2.2kg...

    Stub axle seal and bearing

    Great thanks!

    Stub axle seal and bearing

Doing my swivels just now. Come into the stub axle and YouTube and my manual discuss a roller bearing and seal to be replaced. I have the stub axle with the tab rather than the d-washer. Looking inside there isn’t a roller bearings and not sure how the seal would come out... does this vintage...

    Swivel top pin

Just checked again now I known I’m not looking for thrust bearings- I can see the washer in the housing! I assume I don’t need to change the top and bottom pin, but would I need to change the washer when rebuilding?

    Swivel top pin

Seemed to be ok. But I decided to renew seals and rebuild as I didn’t know quality from before I purchased. Hopefully no damage and I can rebuild ok!

    Swivel top pin

Thanks for confirming. Defo nothing in there when I stripped down... I’ll add when I rebuild, but would it have caused damage not being in there at all?

    Swivel top pin

Here is a screenshot from YouTube showing the thrust washer and then a photo of my parts catalogue. Part 5 FRC2906 when I look up on Paddock doesn’t look the same. Regardless, when I stripped the hub there was nothing in there!

    Swivel top pin

Hope these help? Showing the bearing that goes into the bottom of the swivel and the pin that goes into the top. Landy tool box videos shows two washers with a thrust breathing between going into the slot in the top of the swivel that’s then compressed by the top pin.

    Swivel top pin

FA defender (1990) Just stripped down the swivels for a rebuild. The bottom pin has a bearing, but I was expecting thrust washers to come out the top, but there is nothing. Is that normal?!

    Swivel pour out!

I just thought, if my axle oil is high and turning a bit milky, the ingress of water must be coming from the swivels rather than the hub bearings? So I gather this would require swivel rebuild? or just new seals?
  19. R

    Swivel pour out!

Ah ok, thanks. Can I just retighten and put one shot oil in, or am I best rebuilding?

    Swivel pour out!

Passanger side front wheel has a bit of play. Then noticed a dribble staining from the hub while parked up. Diff oil was high, so figured it was time to do seals and bearings. undid the two bolts holding the break pipe clip above the swivel. As soon as I did, loads of fluid poured out the...
