The gasket holds it in place to stop it coming down. The cracks would be acceptable to me but depends how far they go, cannot see on the mobile. Some will say complete rebuild and some will say bang in a new gasket. Nothing better than having the parts in front of you to decide what way to go.

Good clean and new gasket. Hard to see from pics but all looks ok.

Pulling the head off will hopefully reveal the ticking noise. You may find it with just the rocker cover off.

Could be just a head gasket. Easiest engine in the world to work on. A few bolts and off comes the head.

Get someone to work the key while you bend and twist the wiring loom under the bonnet, especially the big block connectors.

I left mine natural, looks good, goes more grey with time. Just normal welded plate and then galvanised.

I did my 90 myself. Plenty of water and washing liquid and it will slide in. Never tried the rope trick but will next time, I used a screwdriver to flip the seal over.

Get it as hot as possible, bolt and thread area and it will pop out with no problem.

When heated are you getting it red hot and then trying to extract. You might have to drill and tap the hole if that does not work. I would go wider and if threads get a bit damaged, tap will clean them up. At worst you just go bigger thread on that hole. A tap on the end of the extractor with a...

Drill and bolt extractors or easy outs. Some heat if really tight. £3.99 set in screwfix or similar.

Ring spanner with a metal tube over it. Ring spanner with bigger 2 spanner trick than you are using. Ring spanner and hit it with a decent hammer Ring spanner and push with your foot. 2 spanner trick and push with your foot.

Just measure diameter and go on ebay and buy a length to fit. Check all the rest first and get them at the same time. Looks like a straight piece will fit.

Never have problems on a glass fibre car with the earth wire but on an all metal land rover, it is a well known foible.
