    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

Oval, I'm just a bit worried I'm missing something obvious that might burn my spare fuse box...

    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

Tried Defender; too uncomfortable and the ac is rubbish. Discovery is too cramped in the back. Same for Range Rover classic. Sick of massive parts prices on Japanese stuff. P38 is the last beam axle, manual Range Rover, hence my interest in them. All it needs is a lobotomy!

    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

Well, my limited understanding is that there's an engine ecu and the becm which does all the other electrical services. At present the windows, fans and lights all work. But the immobiliser intervenes and won't let the engine start. I can get it to turn over my shorting the starter, but...

    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

Still dreaming of a p38 with the 2.4 bmw diesel, which needs no ecu... Amazed no-one has tried it.

    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

It does. But; do I risk putting a new fuse box on from my spares car? Or will it cook the spare too?

Hi Rick I've a P38 that has poltergeists... I can't get it to accept the key code. The central locking only works when the battery is connected, locking and flashing the hazards. I have to pull the wiper relay to switch them off. Dash lights come on. Shame as it ran superbly until...

    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

I'm beginning to wish someone would nick it... my main concern is it stranding me in an empty bit of Africa. I can indeed unlock the door. And I get dash lights. But I can't get it to accept the code. And I have to pull the relay to get the wipers off. It's a shame as the thing ran like a...

    P38 diesel has poltergeists?

I think I have an electronically injured P38. It's probably been jump-started with reversed terminals or on 24 volts. Currently the central locking doesn't work (other than initially locking the car when I connect the battery). Hence I doubt I can enter the key code. I certainly...

    l322 vs p38

But you can drive on a broken coil - and the insensitive among us might never notice the difference. Just checked the mileage on my Defender. It's done 12,000km (7,500 miles) over the last two months, and a fair proportion of that off road, sometimes in places where recovery consists of...

    l322 vs p38

Really? The P38 is pretty wide. Instinct says it's centre of gravity would be lower than a RR Classic, and certainly lower than a Discovery. Incidentally, a Routemaster bus does without air springs, and they are pretty hard to roll. In fact, with the air springs set to resist roll, there's...

    l322 vs p38

Thats good advice, Datatek, though things like split airbags, airlines, valves etc are a worry too. I did like the air suspension on the 4.0SE and it was the best tow car ever. But reliability is everything and I don't much enjoy being underneath cars - especially when it's hot and dusty...

    l322 vs p38

Remember I'd be looking at a cheap, early L322 - a 2005 would be too expensive. Looks like P38 is in the lead... who'd have thought that.

    l322 vs p38

Interesting that you'd option for Arnott air springs over a coil conversion... The air suspension is great, but I hate being dependant on an electric pump. The old ZF auto used to be the most reliable part of a RR! What went wrong!? The M Class is unreliable by Merc standards, but the...

    l322 vs p38

Hmmm... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The P38 has grown on me (possibly as the Metrocab has died out), but the L322 to me just looks amazing. Each to their own. The front diff thing seems to have been cured by a recall? Is there anything else likely to grind the beast to a halt?

    l322 vs p38

Well, I think this would be Land Rover number nine, Range Rover number six... Mine have to work for a living; pull 3 tonnes, cross the Sahara in 52 degrees C, and run up huge mileages. My Discovery reached 240,000 miles and I've a Defender with over 200,000 on it. I'm just not convinced (yet)...

    l322 vs p38

Minor electrical gremlins I can live with, but there are some scary stories about front props, diffs etc on the L322 which weren't in the P38 fault list. The P38 always struck me as an excellent car, ruined by poor electronics. I'm not sure that there aren't more mechanical issues with the...

    l322 vs p38

I'd like to re-awaken this thread, if I may... I'm looking for another vehicle and whilst head says an M Class Mercedes (sorry), heart says another Range Rover. The budget would stretch to a cheap, early L322, or a nice, late P38. My simple question is, could either of them be relied upon in...

How to lower intercooler temperatures cheaply?

According to Paddocks, that it the 'proper' top hose. It's also exactly the same as the one it replaced. The only mod to the hose is the sensor for the electric fan, which hasn't altered it's position.

Wheel & Tyre packages for rear drum brakes

Why can't you have drums and alloys? Worked on my 110. Had to change the wheel nuts, but nothing else. Explanation please!

Wheel & Tyre packages for rear drum brakes

Sounds like that's a mistake on their site. I think most of the 90's (and 110's) come with drums on the back. Perhaps the V8s had disks? Mine has had both a drum brake Salisbury axle and a Disco axle and Freestyle alloys fitted both, though the cover on the Salisbury popped the centre caps out!
