Am I being daft getting a freelander?

Completely different vehicles in terms of refinement. I replaced my original 1.8L FL1 with a FL2, and the difference was night and day. Much quieter, more comfort, and felt much better as a daily driver. But... after a few years of ownership I did start to suffer from a number of out of warranty...

What have you done to your Freelander today

I like the yellow. I remember seeing them in the showrooms back in 2003. I think the Masai Mara versions were red, yellow and black. The bumpers look nice and dark, as does the roof. Looks good

What have you done to your Freelander today

It's horrible stuff when when those dials go sticky. I tried white spirit initially, but it made it worse. So tried meths instead, which worked a treat. Just nice clean plastic now. Sounds like the Toyota bug remover is a good alternative to meths. Must be quite nasty stuff too to dissolve those...

What have you done to your Freelander today

It was a weekend of mixed success with the poorly TD4. I replaced the turbo core, after cleaning everything up. The vanes were in a right state being coked up with soot, and needing quite a lot of force to move. So all nice and shiny now, and move with the slightest touch. - And following a lot...

    Freelander 1 Random RPM

Have you got a diagnostic that you can check the HP fuel pressure value? Might be worth checking the connection to the fuel rail pressure sensor. These have weakness in developing corrosion, which can lead to erratic behaviour. Any signs of green on the terminals indicates a problem. If you...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Yep, nearly every job I'm doing on the 18 year old TD4 at the moment is having to enlist the assistance of an angle grinder, bolt removers, or Irwin sockets, to remove whatever's been previously chewed, is stuck, or decides to snap.

    Freelander central locking motor measurements?

As Andy says, it's a really fiddly job. (Had I not taken several photos of how it came apart, I would have struggled to have get the whole mechanism back together). But it is possible with a bit of patience. From what I understand, (and this was the experience with mine too), it's the motor...

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 replace turbo guide without removing IRD

Have to say thanks to those that produced this guide and the other one that it is on this site. It worked well in guiding me through taking off the turbo. And importantly giving the faith that it was actually possible to do without removing the IRD. - Especially when at one point, trying to...

    Freelander 1 2002 TD4 turbo lever bloked

Good to hear that you got the turbo off and back on ok. And by the sounds of it, it has hopefully worked in solving the issue you were having.

What have you done to your Freelander today

Today I have been mostly laying under the vehicle cursing and bruising my lower arms trying to remove 5 particularly nasty fixings. One of nuts on the turbo exhaust outlet I think must have recut the thread it took so much effort to turn it along the whole length of the stud, (which has a nice...

    TD4 Fuel pressure sensor confusion

Just fitted the newer shorter sensor to the fuel rail, and no leaks. I think reading all these posts made it seem more complex than it is. Basically it seems as long as you buy a new sensor in a kit that has the washer and the longer additional collar fitting it should be ok. It looks like...

Freelander 1 MAF Readings Decreasing with Increased Throttle - Solved

New HP fuel rail pressure in and the overlay harness, and it’s solved the dodgy decreasing MAF readings. Yippee! Getting closer I think/hope to having it on the road again…. I’ve still got a smoking issue after having driven it briefly up and down the drive a few times. I’d previously cleaned...

    Freelander 1 2002 TD4 turbo lever bloked

Excellent news. Glad to hear you got it taken off okay. Hopefully the cleanup will free the vanes, and you can put it back together with the original cartridge in place.

There is an excellent post here. https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/freelander-td4-replace-turbo-guide-without-removing-ird.349546/ I’ll probably be joining you in having a go at replacing mine too.

    Freelander 1 Reconditioned Turbo Suppliers

Thanks for the helpful replies. If I just went for a CHRA, is calibrating the stop screw a big concern? Or would it simply be a case of looking at the live data and tweaking it through the various rev ranges, and ensuring there is enough/not too much boost? Thanks

    Freelander 1 Reconditioned Turbo Suppliers

Does anybody have any experience of good or places to avoid for reconditioned turbos? There seem to be several listed on eBay around the £200-£220 mark. Their origin looks to be China when you look at the seller details. Most UK suppliers seem to be in the £300-£400 range I think, and want the...

    TD4 Fuel pressure sensor confusion

Dredging up an old thread from the past… I’m currently looking to replace the fuel pressure sensor in my TD4. Look around at various sellers, some are stating that there are two types of part LR009732, and the the shorter body versions will not fit where the longer part is in use. Reading...

Freelander 1 MAF Readings Decreasing with Increased Throttle - Solved

Quick update on this... I've had a chance to clean the intercooler and hoses, and now back on, no more smoking. Great! Still got the problem with the fueling though. But I've ruled out the MAF being the source of the problem. - Two MAFs I thought were unlikely to give the same fault...

    VCU support bearings

There will be 'some' play in the VCU mounts. Might be worth checking the rear diff mounts as well, as these can be the cause of knocking/bang sounds when cornering hard. I'm aware one of the 'reputable' suppliers had some issues with bearings failing prematurely. But I thought that was the...

Freelander 1 TD4 oil in the air intake

I've had a similar problem (along with some other issues). A couple of days back I took the intercooler off my TD4, (straightforward job once you tackle the rusted screws on the wheel arch covers, as the bumper needs to come off), and was able to tip a small but decent amount of oil into a pan...
