    Replacement Series 3 engine

If you need to get it up and running quickily and cheaply then putting in a Disco 200Tdi without the turbo as per the 'Glencoyne engineering' method would seem like a good idea. It's bound to be more work than just fitting like for like, but then it is a much better engine than the 2 1/4 diesel...

    Instructions!

It's easy to see if a ball joint is worn. Just get somebody to jiggle the steering wheel from side to side while you watch each joint. If it's heavy clunking noises you're getting then it's probably more than a ball joint. Jack the wheel off the ground, face the wheel, grab the upper and...

    brake lights flashing

Yep, mine's got those beepy relay things in the indicator wiring - they're a bit annoying, but give confidence that the trailer lights are actually working.

    15J Sherpa engine

Perhaps the marinized Land-Rover and BMC B-series engines had a different flywheel housing to the road going versions.

    15J Sherpa engine

I don't know much about marine engines - I was just wandering if you were saying that a 3 cyl 1500cc marine variant of the Land-Rover engine had been produced, because I've heard that a 6 cyl engine was developed in either Spain or South Africa based on the 4 cyl 2286cc Land-Rover engine.

    Economy Drive!

Teflon, However many years you've spent studying mechanical engineering and playing with rockets it does not change the fact that what you said was incorrect. It is very simple: You said that fitting 3.54:1 diffs will raise the gearing by 25% from the standard 4.7:1 diffs. Given that you...

    Series 3 opinions

The first vehicle I had on the road was an 88" 2 1/4 petrol IIA. It was great fun but as I was skint I soon switched to a car because the Landy was using way too much petrol.

    15J Sherpa engine

What I've been wandering is whether a 200Tdi would go into an old Rover P4 80 without too much butchery - because they were fitted with the Land-Rover 2 1/4 petrol engine.

    brake lights flashing

First trace through the brake light wiring and confirm that it is standard. If it's been modified then it's probably best to put it back to standard, because the standard wiring is simple and works fine. Set all electrical switches off. Turn on the ignition and operate the indicators. If the...

    Economy Drive!

So you say 3.54:1 diffs increase gearing by 25% and I say they increase the gearing by 33%, but you say we are both probably right....I see....;) So in algebraic terms what you're saying is: x/3=(x/4)+1/3 Mmm... that's interesting. So what if we make x=3? Does that mean that...

    15J Sherpa engine

Are you saying there was a 1500cc version of the Land-Rover derived Sherpa 2.5 diesel engine?

    series 3 2.5tdi engine swap

There's a bit of confusion here! You say a 200tdi is out of your budget, so what is this 2.5tdi engine from a 90 you have bought? I'm wandering if you've bought is what's known as the 19J turbo diesel engine, which (amongst other engines) was factory fitted to 90s and 110s up to 1990. These...

    Diesel or Petrol

If your not going to do much mileage then I suppose fuel consumption is not such a big issue for you. The 2 1/4 petrol engines are more robust, run nicer and are more powerful than the 2 1/4 diesels. Diesel engines can be expensive to fix if you get problems with the fuel injection system, but...

    Engine swap in 2 days

Your fuel guage is probably over-reading. Take one of the covers off the tank and use a dipstick to measure the actual quantity of diesel in the tank and compare this to what the fuel guage says.

    dodgy SIIA

SIII and IIA chassis are a bit different. The cross member under the flywheel housing and the mounting brackets for the front flexible brake hoses are different. Your average MOT tester is not going to know about all this stuff. It probably does not even say on your registration documents...

Interesting idea. How long do the sheets last?

I like just like the sound of V8 engines, but I'll wait until they can be picked up for a few hundred pounds.

    Grinding ito 2nd gear!

springs popped out or broken in the synchromesh hub on a SIII box? It's not a IIA box is it - they are supposed to grind when changing into second and first. You could drain the main box and see what bits of metal come out in the oil.
