    Break-even point

I was on the way to the garage to get the repairs done when it went all black and nasty, so not much spent yet, just a few spare parts, some of which I should be able to return. Don't know what's wrong with the engine yet but I'm assuming completely knackered based on the noise it was making...

    Break-even point

My 1991 200Tdi 110 five door died on the way to the garage yesterday. Apparently it felt the need to drop its engine oil all over the roads of Cambridgeshire, in addition to already having failed the MoT with about £2k of welding and other bits required. Also didn't feel the need to tell me by...

Any point repairing 200tdi exhaust manifold?

OK thanks I'll give it a go.

Any point repairing 200tdi exhaust manifold?

The exhaust manifold on my 200tdi is leaking gas where the joints for cylinders 1 and 4 join the rest of the manifold. It makes things very restful on the M11, as the car slowly fils with CO gas. Can it be repaired, i.e. filled and wrapped up, or is the only safe way to replace it?

    Dual batteries

Is there any reason why a twin battery setup should not have the two batteries permanently linked? My set-up has a button switch to connect the two, but due to a stroke of genius on someone else's part the radio only works if the two batteries are linked. Hardly a major trauma to flick the...

    200tdi power steering pump belt

Why oh why is it always the £150 option, rather than the £5 option? Thanks everyone.

    200tdi power steering pump belt

I cannot stop the damned thing squealing. I have a new belt at the correct tension, but it still squeals near full lock. Very embarrassing in Homebase car park. Any solutions?

Reluctant to make another headlining thread, but ...

I did this on mine recently, it improved it a lot. Cost less than £50 all in. Don't forget to get some new fir tree connector for after you snap the old brittle ones when you take the 'carcass' off. Scrape the carcass very very clean before you spray the glue on it. You may also need to drill...

What have you done on your Defender today?

Covered the head lining with van carpet. Looks a treat, after the saggy grey dirty vinyl version I had before.

    Loss of power? Help!

We had this (1991 200tdi). We get 125 miles or thereabouts for each of the top three quarters of the fuel gauge, so I thought I could get the same from the last quarter. 15 miles later we were at the side of the A11, family waiting while I walked back to the nearest service station. Now I reset...

Heavens! In that case I'll be brave and see how round the hole is.

    Holes in B pillar

Yeah, I have these holes on both sides under the pillars. Not outside the bounds of possibility that I have rusty holes on both sides, hard to know what was there when the car was built and what has 'evolved' over the last twenty years and 170,000 miles.

    Rear Wiper

Can't do pics but what I think you call the cradle (the brass bit with the hole and rubber washer) is the wrong way round compared to mine.I have a marine ply board backing my door, and it screws onto that. I used a home-made rubber washer for the outside, it doesn't seem to leak. The crack...

    Holes in B pillar

What is the point of the holes i the B pillar (the big oval ones, on the inside of the car)? All they seem to do is allow a draft from the outside, from what I presume is a drain hole on the bottom of the pillar. If they drain hole is actually an unintended rotten rust hole, please let me know...

    Changing horn

I have had to replace the horn on my 1992 110. I can't find a single terminal horn, and the twin terminal one I have got is pretty useless. So, two questions. How should I wire in a twin terminal horn, when I only have one wire to plug in? Is there anything special that needs to be done for an...
