Freelander 1 Head Gasket Leak - sorted then unsorted again

Just doing an MGZR with the 1.4 litre K series. Someone used an MLS in the past, but the liners are flush with the block deck face. For the MLS to seal properly, the liners need about 2 thou of an inch stand proud. BW750 is a much better choice here as it will seal the fire rings adequately.

I completely agree - it really is a lovely engine to work on :)

N-series gasket will work - I believe that the oil and coolant pathways are generally very similar to the K-series that it is clearly based on. FWIW I’m using the BW750 on the MGZR 105 I’m recommissioning for my daughter to learn to drive in :)

If you’re taking the sump off as part of a rebuild, then fine. Otherwise, I’m with you: I wouldn’t bother…

Freelander 1 Head Gasket Leak - sorted then unsorted again

My anxiety with this kind of gasket failure (i.e. leak of the gasket fire rings) are two fold: 1. The cylinder head has gone through a severe heat cycle and has gone soft 2. The cylinder liners have dropped. I know you'll be checking both of those things. If the liner stand proud is less than...

You were charged 200 quid for that? Jeepers. is the plug intact? Might be an idea to replace the sensor that comes with a fresh cable.

You’re lucky - the three amigos are usually an MOT failure :)

Paint versus powder coating: which is best?

Thanks! maybe I should go to Retropower engineering and get them to hot-zinc spray them and then Raptor… but I have a hunch I won’t be able to afford their services (but I love their work!)

Paint versus powder coating: which is best?

I think I'll paint for now. But may be if I can find a pair of spare subframes, I could get those galvanised in preparation for the "next time"!

Paint versus powder coating: which is best?

No worries at all! If Defenders can have galv chassis, why not FL galv subframes?

If you can get live data telemetry, that can be really helpful to work out more complex problems :)

Thanks chaps - really interesting read. I like the idea of galvanising - not sure about the heat distortion though…?

    Freelander 1 Freelander EV

What is the process of getting the DVLA to re-classify a vehicle's emission classification? I want to convert my MGF - not to electric straightaway, but to EU3 or EU4 (which would be straightforward and would avoid the need to pay the ULEZ charge everytime I drive my car). But if I did that...

    FL1 bonnet struts

Good price too! :D Just bought a replacement strut for the rear door (I hadn't realised that the door was supported by a gas strut!) - and a single strut to replace the original costs between £18-22 - so a pair with fitting hardware, this looks good value :)

OMG - just reading through this thread. Your lad in the Freelander likely saved some childrens' lives! If he couldn't stop for a massive, silver Land Rover, scant chance he'd have stopped for a child. Not sure what I would do in this situation - a lot will depend on whether you believe...
