Flange Plate Steering Relay to Chassis 217694

I managed to salvage from my old chassis the plate that goes on the underside of the chassis that braces the steering relay. When i came to attach it to the new (Richard's) chassis, i have found the holes are in the wrong / different place. I have a choice of either buying a new one (a plate...

    grommets on wiring loom

I am still busy on brakes, suspension etc but I want to feed the relevant part of the new wiring loom down the chassis whilst I have easy access. But I am already confused. In the picture below, I think (?) this is the part of the loom that goes down the chassis from near the fuel tank to the...

    axle breathers

On my front axle (1st pic), it looks pretty obvious what I need to do to replace the breather. I have just unscrewed the old breather, and can screw the new one in. This is what I have on my back axle (2nd pic). I can’t work out whether this is a left over from an old breather that has broken...

    Longtitudinal Tube Assembly part number

I have removed the 3 steering linkages. I was planning to remove the track rod ends at each end of the linkage rods, buy replacements and retain the rods, as it would be nice to keep it original. But I have been unable to remove the ends. I managed to get one end off the drag link and couldn’t...

leather check strap & my axle box section

As per your suggestion, I went with cutting slits in each side of the box section so i could thread the strap through and it will rest on the tube section. Just about to slap some paint on the holes, and will finish off tomorrow. Cheers

leather check strap & my axle box section

I have the 2 leather check straps for my rear axle – part numbers are 237100 and 274469. I believe the standard axle that these are design for does NOT have the strengthening box section under the axle tube (on the LHS/passenger side of the car) – shown in photo. So the strap (although a tad...

    Chassis too high off springs?

I had the mix of shackle plates - some with thread, some without. Some with v small offset, some with longer offset, all as per parts book. So i think that is ok. I have put the bottle jack on, and squeezed it up on one side with some heavy straps. This moves the spring into the right place...

    Chassis too high off springs?

you got me worried, but i have double checked my invoice, and i have got the same part numbers. I have 4 wheels/tyres from another car, i think i will put these heavy items on top of the chassis and see if that does enough to sink it down a bit. if not, i will try using the bottle jack approach.

    Chassis too high off springs?

I have a new (Richards) chassis and new springs. I have had the wheels on for a grand total of 1 day, and it is back on axle stands. At the moment, whilst I do have the diffs on (which are on the axle) I don’t have any of the heavy components on the chassis (i.e. engine, gearbox, body), which...

    Can I save my bulkhead

I decided to get my bulkhead from Richards. For a few reasons: they are about to start producing pressed bulkheads for S3, which are competitively priced. As i have sourced my chassis from Richards, i reckon the bulkhead should fit well on this. They also have an excellent reputation for...

    swivel housing bolt

thanks for the responses. they got me thinking and i worked out that the front axle may not be original. I retested the hole and worked out it was 6mm i.e. metric. All good. Many thanks for the help.

    swivel housing bolt

I have bought some 250693 bolts which from my parts list should be the right bolts to fit on the bracket which holds that big seal that goes over the swivel housing. but they don't fit. i can't find any bolts that do fit in my collection. I have cleaned out any muck from the holes, and the...

    big problems installing Universal Joints

many thanks. I have ordered some GKN UJ, so will see if i have any better luck with them. I will be EVEN more careful.

    big problems installing Universal Joints

I am trying to replace the UJ on my front half shafts, as one of them was very tired, so it made sense to replace them both. However, try as I might, I cannot install replacements – I have b*******ed up 4 so far trying. I am carefully following the process described on YouTube by Britannica...

Refitting of Steering Relay top seal

from what i remember, it was in reasonable shape. I have to admit, i should have taken the opportunity to give it a good clean before fitting the seal, but i do know it wasn't looking bad (otherwise i would have).

Refitting of Steering Relay top seal

Worked it out (or more accurately, a local friendly Landy mechanic worked it out). Whilst i had removed part of the old seal, i didn't realise that part of what i thought was the flange was actually the remaining metal part of the original seal. He was able to punch it out, and then it was...

Refitting of Steering Relay top seal

I have attached a couple more photos. You can just about see that the seal i took out is smaller than my replacement (in all dimensions), and you can see how the old one would fit into the groove in the retainer plate. Whereas i can't see how i could get the replacement to fit in that groove...

Refitting of Steering Relay top seal

I cannot work out what is going on with this seal. I have bought part no 213340 on Ebay. From what I can tell, this part should fit all the series vehicle relays. It appears to be thicker and slightly wider than the one I have removed (which came out in lots of bits, it was so worn, so it is...

At a guess, is this relay worth saving?

I am getting some luggage scales later today. as well as measuring the relay, I need them for rebuilding the swivel housings. I have now refilled the relay with oil from the top till it takes no more, but when I look up the screw holes underneath, there is no sign of oil (despite lots of...

At a guess, is this relay worth saving?

I have been adding some oil with a syringe, a bit at a time, and working it into the relay. It was very very tight but has eased. I don’t have luggage scales. I tried to use a torque wrench to measure it but I couldn't get that to work, so I have arrived at this method – string, connected to...
