Photo is of the head after some cleaning - there is a slight hint of blue paint, so you are right, that does look like that was the original colour. I presume it is frowned-upon to change the colour (e.g. to limestone?), as that duck egg blue is a bit shocking.

I have now removed the oil bath air filter to clean it up and I cannot for the life of me work out how this bit of foil could possibly have got into the carb. There is no sign of anywhere it could have detached from, there are obviously the mesh filters in place, and nothing obvious in the air...

It's odd that it's in the engine bay, as the driver is unlikely to hear any ticking (not that they care too much!).
