P38A P38 4.6 HSE on eBay, opinions please

Hi all, I'm looking for a P38, or potentially an L322, for a friend. I've seen this one on eBay which sounds very good. Done 107k but new top hat liner engine from Turner Engineering at 75k. Present owner since 2001 and only 1 previous. Going from the description it's been very well looked...

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Have to say i do like that caravan, not really into caravans but think I'd be happy with yours! Oh, and towing it with a S63 AMG is the icing on the cake!!

P38A Collected RRC, biggest surprise was how good P38 is!!

This is the thing, our P38 normally averages about 14 mpg because it's nearly all town driving. When I used it to collect the classic it was 95% motorway and I was quite lucky with the traffic as not too many holdups. I found that a lot of the time I was hardly pressing on the accelerator, and...

P38A Collected RRC, biggest surprise was how good P38 is!!

There was me thinking the diesel was underpowered....can't think why I thought that...wait I've remembered it was from the many 'P38 buying guide' posts I've read on here!! :D:D

P38A Collected RRC, biggest surprise was how good P38 is!!

I would have thought with a P38 diesel you'd need your foot to the floor to get anywhere towing nearly 3 tonnes? killing any hope of decent mpg, with a V8 you only have to tickle the accelerator :D

P38A Collected RRC, biggest surprise was how good P38 is!!

Posted on here few days back that I had a 400 mile round trip to collect a RRC and would be using my dads '98 P38 4.0 V8 with car trailer to collect it. Asked for approx mpg figures for towing, obviously varies depending on how you drive etc but anything from 9 was quoted! Well, I've collected...

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Thanks, they seem to be getting thin on the ground in this condition. My dad bought it in 2004 from LR main dealer and it's been serviced there every year since, does on average 3k miles a year so mpg not a great concern. Keep looking at changing it but for the amount you'd need to add to it...

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Completely agree, the P38 has been both reliable, touch wood! and a pleasure to drive, that's why my parents have had it so long. I suspect I'll have to take it off their hands when they do change it :) Just running out of space to keep them all!

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

I've had a '71 3.5 on carbs, '87 3.5 EFI, '92 3.9 which i converted to a 200 Tdi and still have, although not quite road worthy at the moment. So i couldn't agree more, don't buy one if mpg is a concern! I just wasn't sure on how much difference towing would make as I've not towed much with the...

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Not concerned with mpg on the classic, I've had a few so i know what they're like! Plus it's more of a project and won't be used all that much. A rarely use my dad's P38 and the reason for asking about mpg when towing was so that i could consider other options, i.e pay a transport company to...

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Thanks for the replies. I'll certainly be driving it like a nun on her way to church!! Hopefully i can keep the fuel bill under £200. Have had a quote of £250 for car to be transported, thought it was a lot but considering it now!

P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Had a look online but can't seem to find much information on mpg figures for towing. I've a 400 mile round trip to collect a classic 4 door and I'll be using my dad's '98 P38 4.0 auto. So I've got 200 miles towing car trailer then 200 miles with the RRC on the trailer. Nearly all motorway, can...

Classic Tdi fuel sender unit, which is flow and return?

Thank you, just wanted to be sure. Think my lift pump is the problem so fitting a new one this afternoon.

Classic Tdi fuel sender unit, which is flow and return?

Might seem a daft question but want to double check which is flow and return without going to the hassle of removing sender from tank. On the attached photo I'm presuming the pipe on the left, with the arrow and which leads to the rubber hose, is the flow and the pipe on the right with the...

Classic 200 tdi RRC. How to test fuel pump/sender unit, idiot's guide please!

Thanks for the replies. Well i am an idiot!! Always thought it was a pump and sender in the tank but turns out it's not, just a sender! Confusion probably lies because it has been converted from a V8. So i spent a day trying to fix a problem that didn't exist, all experience i suppose!

Classic 200 tdi RRC. How to test fuel pump/sender unit, idiot's guide please!

Was hoping to get my RRC back on the road this week but it won't start. There is power to the in tank fuel pump but it aint pumping! The pump is only a few years old so don't see why it should have failed. There is a blue and white wire and black wire which connect to the pump. I've taken the...

    Classic Should I install 3.5 V8 or 300 TDI??

I have a bit of experience with tractors, seen as i grew up on a farm, but my dad has always had Ford. Still have the Fordson power major that came on the farm new in the early sixties. Not used now but still fires up after a battery charge!
