There are loads of posts on this subject so have a good search and adhere to the advice. We have an 02 plate TD4 and it has been great. Only breakdowns were windscreen wiper linkage (30 minute job) and fuel pump failure (more expensive). Now approaching 110,ooo miles. Cheers Blippie

No. The TD4 BMW engine was introduced in 2000. Prior to that it was the Rover L-series diesel. I'm 99% sure they didn't do any autos with the older L-series diesel. The Freelander doesn't come with diff lock, but perhaps he had an early base model without traction control? Cheers Blippie
