Gidday, my old man is thinking about buying a freelander and wants my advice. I know they give a few problems, but don't really know that much about them. He is 75 and only does between 5-10,000km a year, so it wouldn't be getting overworked. Petrol or diesel? any models we should steer well clear of? Any advice would be great, thanks.

The model to stay clear of is the freelander.

later td4 diesel only all k series petrols are a disaster or buy a discovery

as much as it pains me, I have to agree with fanatic on this one.

td4 is the best out of all of them, and if you can find an auto, even better.

they do have some issues (like all older vehicles) but I use mine for work all day every day, really solid to drive.

no way like not ever consider the incredibly fragile 1.8 petrol, and avoid it's petulant fat sister the 2.5 V6 as being equally temperamental. the td4 is a BMW engine, so should be fairly reliable if looked after with regular oil and filter changes. (esp crankcase breather filter)

The diesel are the best, with the later TD4 being the pick of the bunch.

acidentaly peed of a freelander driver yesterday, I came across a 4x4 stuck in snow, couldnt tell it was a landy to much snow on it. sugested he use dif lock, to be told didnt have one. APARENTLY OPTIONAL EXTRA, strange didnt like it when i said it was half a 4x4. only as i left i saw freelander badge (oops) but that wouldnt encourage me to by one.

thanks for the advice guys, pop is looking at getting a diesel one so thats good and most later model vehicles in NZ are auto. Are all diesel models the TD4 motor?

No.

The TD4 BMW engine was introduced in 2000. Prior to that it was the Rover L-series diesel.

I'm 99% sure they didn't do any autos with the older L-series diesel.

The Freelander doesn't come with diff lock, but perhaps he had an early base model without traction control?
