take it you've got a 3dr freebie? if so sounds like a failed door seal! all my freelanders have been 3dr and all have had the same thing happen but was fixed by stealers. it seems to be where the lower door seal fits to the body where the hard top fits.

sounds to me like the cat's breaking up like stevieb42 says get it on a ramp and have someone inside rev engine at constant revs at listen carefully.

go for it mate!!! avoid the petrol and try for a td4 if you can i've had 3 freelanders, 1 petrol and 2 td4's..... 1.8 skinned me alive but thedoozle ones are excellent to drive and good on fuel too. dunt listen to the wellie wearing traaaaaaaater boys:D they cant handle modern...
