Clues could be in any codes stored. Crank sensor is a poss cause but I don't think it gives a code. Where you say cut out did the engine stop or just loose power and how did it restart?

Agreed, if a couple of glow plugs fail then those cylinder won't ignite the fuel, which then goes out the exhaust and smells like unburnt fuel. And may be some white smoke until they start firing correct. Glow plugs can be tested in situ with a meter. Resistance across each glow plug should be...

I think the ecu is internal to the gearbox. Could just swap Ecu from your gear box if they are coded to the car. That's if you have the aisin awf21

You say it can rev high but not accelerate, does it rev on it's own? Is it constantly like that? Poor starting and white smoke in start up can be down to glow plugs, assuming it's diesel. Would you do the work yourself. Do you have a meter?

When tightening the adjusting bolts are you holding them with Allan key so they don't turn? The bolts a double ended and so won't be tight where it bolts to the runner but is held in place by the bolt on outside against the door.

White smoke is unburnt diesel I did search td4 white smoke, Mentions crankcase breather filter being blocked can cause the issue. If it's the element type filter it should be changed at least every 2 years anyway.

Is it possible to swap xenon controller with other side? Any codes stored? No experience of xenon light issues just where I would start looking, prob with codes first as that may give more info

I would probably go with a cheaper eBay complete unit. The 37 pound one probably only has 12 month warranty so I'd take the risk of cheaper, replace again if necessary. Once you've changed one they are quite straight forward to change as soon as it starts making grinding noises. No point going...

Probably best to ask in freelander section. What tools do you have available? What test equipment do you have? What tests have you done?

Check oil level to see if it's increasing. If problem is with fuel pump leaking diesel into the engine make sure to change oil as it will be contaminated with diesel.
