Hi, apologies but I'm racking my brain as to why my starter motor doesn't turn when it's connected to gearbox and power. I dismantle and run it off the engine and it works fine. As soon as I bolt it back in and add power it just sparks at the battery. as if something it stopping it from turning. the engine turns over fine with a socket on the crank. What am I missing? I added a new earth strap and also connected up a separate positive to test directly to the battery.

scratch that. just removed again and doesn't work. so will rebuild thanks

A knackered starter motor will often spin with no load but not develop enough torque to turn the engine over.

Might need new brushes and/or the commutator cleaning

Are they straightforward to refurb? New brushes,etc.
