Need to check battery voltage after standing overnight, it really does not take much for a d3 to sulk due to a weak battery.
My last weak d3 battery went on my old series2, still on there with zero issues 3 years later, yet on the d3 caused all...
I don't see why you'd buy one with springs when you can buy one with air. Sure air springs need replacing, but so do metal springs. It's generally quite reliable unless you ignore leaks, dash warnings etc
So you want to spend £2-5k on a D3, use it as a daily, take it green-laning, but not spend lots on maintenance and repairs?
Good luck!
You might get lucky. You need to find one that has been loved but is still cheap(?), so as @lynall says, I’d...

I have had my d3 for ten years and reckon 1k a year on parts alone! that includes tyres etc.
£700 a year road tax, 25mpg average.
Never failed to complete a journey under its own steam.
That said if something big goes I reckon it will be the end...
The Milwaukee grease gun has a little button you push to bleed the air out nice and easy to use, it is especially useful as some of the trailers I have to grease up use three whole cartridges of grease.
It's 100% 300tdi + LT77, previous owner cut and welded mounts back.. has a steve parkers kit, so can give you the extended hoses also
Everything can go - I only need the transfer box, even have a brand new clutch kit to give you (LOF heavy duty)...
If you really want the clock at the right time, you could disconnect the battery and reconnect it at the right time if you aren’t using it for a bit, or pull the clock out the dash and pull the plug until the times match if you are using it
I think it comes with a large plate that mounts on the outside of the door skin, fitted mine a few years ago, still on there.
Even if fitted well they are a bit crap, and seem to shuffle around a bit.
