Plenty of modern crap still with leaf springs on the rear axle.
Series of all models are pretty crap, 90/110/defenders also crap, though people seem to get really upset when you say that, so it is always worth a mention every now and then!
Always stat first, tdi can run rad so fecked they are only fit for scrap and not over heat.
Are the small coolant air bleed pipes still present?
Is the coolant system pressurising by to much when at operating temperature?
I would jury rig some temporary temperature gauge set up for testing purposes, until you are sure the engine is good and you are not going to wreck it.
A cheap mulitmeter that accepts K series sensors will do, or cappiliary sensors are the best
Handy tip for all you greasers, if you get a tapered grease gun end you can use it to grease normal nipples by simply poking it into the spring loaded ball bearing on the grease nipple, and as the pointy bit is super slim you dont waste ages...
Spend a bit of time routing the pipe nicely, nothing looks worse than a poorly bent and routed pipe.
The straight bits are actually the hardest to get looking nice.
Cheap cus it's not worth much, none of the D3/D4s are really. At thier age now any one of them you buy could be about to drop a 4 figure repair bill in your lap without warning, no matter how well it's been maintained. Or worse it could write...
