Do you have a water butt, or two? Water softeners being what they are, the deposit might be salt or salt compunds.

When we got a water softener I thought great, we can wash the car at home now, previously banned as the scale left behind could only be removed using that scale cleaner that makes it fizz... The softener isn't great for that, although now not...
