Hi, I have a problem with my brake light / reverse light fuse blowing as soon as I select reverse. (Automatic ZF box 2004). I have checked all bulbs, cleaned all contacts except on the gearbox itself. I know there is a reverse light switch on the older auto boxes but I cannot find anything on this with the ZF box? Is there a switch or should I be looking somewhere else. Thanks in advance for any help! Sorry I meant ZF box in title not ZT!!
 
Thanks James. Have traced as much of the wiring as I can, can't see any chaffing anywhere of bad earth. Looks like a trip to the auto electricians tomorrow!

Do you have a towbar?

If it does, I would be checking the wiring within the socket for shorts and bad earthing.

ThebigLad has a point there, so does JamesMartin...it's not a switch, nor a bad earth issue...blowing fuse means some kind of touching between live and earth somewhere. U could also unplug the lamps and see then...if it will not blow the fuse so, plug them back one by one untill the fuse blows again... the short circuit traceing is not the hardest job in electrics but if u are not familiar with it u better go to an electrician if no easy/visible signs of it
 
Thanks to Thebiglad and Sierrafery for further advice. I have removed all rear lights (complete units unplugged) and fuse still blows instantly when reverse selected. It has got factory fitted tow bar / plus both black and grey towing electric sockets. These appear to be ok (visually) however, I'm not an electrical wiz so its in tomorrow with the experts.
 
Ok, been in to auto electricians today and they can't find the short! Definately a short after XYZ switch but cannot be found. Tow bar electrics are all good, all rear lights etc... fine. I'm wondering, is it possible that the XYZ switch can short internally to cause the reverse lights fuse to blow? _ Just looking at worst case (expensive) scenario.

Does anybody know if the wiring for rear lights etc... run up the rear pillar and then along the edge of the roof to the front? The reason I ask is that I had the roofliner out three weeks ago to cure leak and wondered if I might have trapped something there?

The auto electricians are having another look tomorrow.

IF u are able to handle a multimeter and u have RAVE(and can decipher a diagram) i will try to guide you step by step ... those electricians were drunk??? dont give them booze before the job;) ... the xyz switch would have trigerred the M&S warnings imo, but u may try to unplug it and see what happens to make sure(an ideea how to do that is here even though it's not the issue http://www.landroverclubvi.com/uplo..._manual_mode_light_illuminated_860403nasf.pdf, ... no connection to the brake/reverse lights across the roof whatsoever

The wiring for reversing lights, goes from a connector junction behind the kick panel in the passenger's footwell, up the N/S 'A' pillar, along the N/S inner roof gutter to a header above the 'B' pillar, where it branches out to each side's tail lamp cluster and the towing electrics pickup connector -

Depending on spec, there may also be a branch spliced-off at the top of the 'A' pillar to a connector behind the rear view mirror, for the auto-dipping mirror fitted to some models.

Thankyou all for your suggestions. I have been tracing back the things that I have done that could have in some way caused this problem. Only major thing was removing the headliner to check sunroof leaks (which ended up being the roof bars). So tonight, I took the headliner out again and checked all the wiring for obvious damage or whether I had trapped it anywhere. I couldn't see anything wrong at all. So whilst everything was apart I tried reverse and now everything works fine! So I put the lining back in and connected each interior light / sunroof switch switch individually and checked reverse each time to see whether one of these connections could be at fault. It worked every time. Everything now fitted in and working ok. Only worry now is that there must be a bad wire somewhere that could cause the problem again. It would have been better perhaps to have found an actual fault!
