I have a 12J (2.5 N/A [non turbo]) and I love it. Just remember that these are old hard working utility / tractor engines that are designed for power as opposed to speed. When Land Rover bolted the turbo and up-rated injection pump onto the 12J and branded it the 19J (Turbo Diesel), it wasn't necessarily intended that they suddenly be driven like a sports car! The turbo should in theory squeeze a bit more power out of the engine and make it a little more efficient rather than quicker, so don't buy one thinking that it's going to be like **** off a stick.

200 and 300 tdi engines, are a fair bit quicker and have a lot more torque (I think?) but still aren't engines which are designed to go fast. The new 2007 ford engine thats in the newest Defenders is a different breed however and it probably will go like stink.

To be fair I owned a 2.5n/a and a 19J at the same time for a little while and I have to say the n/a was as quick flat out and felt a bit nippier. It did have slightly smaller diameter wheels on which probably accounts for it. If given a choice between the two I'd probably go for the n/a just because there are less things to potentially go wrong. The 200tdi is a whole different kettle of fish though. Just for a laugh can you imagine driving a 2 ton disco with either of the older engines in it? No, nor me.

compared to the 12 & 19Js they do

i've lost count of how many i've done this to

the difference it makes will put a BIG grin on yer face again
Still got the big grin from the upgrade, think i'll wait till that wears off before i up the power again!

Will it damage the engine?

if you boot it all of the time, therefore making use of the additional power sooner or later something will wear out/break/fail - just the same as any other engine - another way to look at the mod is to enable a better MPG

I have also 'tweaked' quite a few 300tdis, including my own. I would suggest fitting an EGT meter, though. The alarm on mine is set at 725c and I know a couple of places where I can set it off. Normally long uphills taken in 5th.

BUT I don't agree with either his description of how to do it, or what he does. A far better discussion of what to do is here:
How To Increase The Performance Of Your 200/300tdi - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

He doesn't advocate touching the 'smoke screw' under the tin cap. That is the adjustment that makes the pullaway better, and I think it is essential to turn that screw in one to one and a half turns clockwise. If it causes too much smoke, back it off a bit.

The same info is on the LRUK forum as well.

Have to agree, i bought a 19J 1989 (as research said it had the redesigned case) but im a noob to LR's and the thought of electronics and engine mangement scare me! She is a first time project so i can learn my way round an engine - ive learnt alot in only 3 months! I may upgrade to a 200/300 when she dies but shes got 138K on and other than general work shes not broke down on me yet. Only a 2nd car though for off road use, and the odd potter around, I love her! As for speed, she pulls fine n will happily sit at 65/70 on motorway and keep nice with traffic on every other road.

OK if we're dragging up an old thread here's an update. I took the 19j I mentioned earlier out of my 110. Left it standing for about two years, then put it in my 109. It's now in everyday use again and going great. Started no problem through the recent snow and ice and is a big improvement on the old engine that was in the 109. Moral of the story, don't throw one away you never know when it'll come in handy.

I would have kept mine but it melted... quite literally. Kind of my fault, radiator cap was knackered and it overheated quite majorly on the A2, was never the same after that :D

I had a 19J in my 90 it was slow and horrible struggle to pull out at junctions if you want to tow anything expect to be doing no more than 30mph, I changed mine for a V8 never looked back!!

you or the Landy? :p

Neither of us ever fully recovered, with the 19j expiring shortly after the overheating incident and me being completely paranoid about overheating to this day!:eek: My Tdi seems very cool running though thankfully, new radiator and twin fans just in case, and I'm always keeping a watchful eye on the coolant level and the temp guage ;)

Thinking of getting a 110 td this weekend for my first landy. Can't see the td spending much time in it tho to be honest, from what iv heard! Il have to see how it goes!

I've got an 86 110 with a 2.5td engine. Though its a turner engineering remanufactured one. So i guess a bit better than the original. Its been fine so far. Though does lack a bit of poke.

My 1988 Ninety came with a 2.5TD in it - apparently it was the second one the Landy had had. I ran it for a few months quite happily - it was pretty smokey, but not altogether useless. Once the weather improved and I wasn't relying on the Landy for work everyday, I took a week off work and dropped a 200tdi in. The 19J went on fleabay (I know some people give them away!) and got snapped up - so there's plenty of people happy to run them.
