Hi all in relation to my earlier thread of "ace issues" the disco went in for an overall health check, the following was noted :

1. Oil leak from rocker cover gaskets
2. Coolant leak from throttle body Housing - albeit this is wery old staining ?
3. plenum foam split ??
4. Viscous hub split ?
5. Coolant leak from radiator
6. Oil leak from valley gasket
7. Rear axle pinion leaking
8. Bearing / bush on front ace damaged - knocking
9. Front ace ram leaking - knocking
10. Replace discs and pads all round
11. Misfire - plugs / leads / coil packs ??
12 . Replace all tyres

This was carried out at my local overland specialist, with the exception of the ace I think I can do the jobs as a project other than the ace and maybe the valley gasket, I'm not sure.

So here's my dilemma - the disco is in really nice condition and the garage quoted me circa £1600 plus vat to sort so do I sell it as spares or repairs or plunge in and do as much as I can and leave the specialist work to the pro's ??

Opinions would be greatly received :-(

Thats what I thought ?? I'd day the disco is way above average condition and would be a shame to scrap :-(

Well I'm handy if push comes to shove with a spanner, so will take the advice of the tool kit to top up my existing tools and give it a bash - can anyone confirm how technical the ace job is though, it will help me sleep tonight - lol

if you dont have a Haynes manual or a RAVE ... download one free from here land rover rave technical system in Workshop maual select the proper section and see Repairs... you have everything there

Yeah I've got rave so will take a look at that :) forgot to mention my disco is a V8 and I'm only 5ft 6" so will need a ladder to get on the engine bay lol !

And no 1600 doesn't include tyres and radiator lol

you only have to do the maths on the hourly rate ,to see there making a nice little profit. plus ya parts..... around 27 hours labour:eek:

Yeah - its funny I took a freelander there last year and they quoted almost £1k for some work - when I worked it out, I could get all the parts of eBay for around £300 - the only reason I've gone back is because they know their stuff and wouldn't miss anything out, there is method to my madness lol

I bet 90% of D2's on the road have got half those issues. The only difference is you know about yours! Leaks can be important but sometimes they can be ignored! I only really want to know a job when it NEEDS doing tbh. Your garage aren't exactly criminals, they're just pointing out issues. What they're not telling you are which jobs are trivial, which are necessary and which are crucial. My garage would have taken me for thousands over the years, but I have one thing that saves the expenses- I haven't got any money!! Re ACE, I think some convert back to standard anti-roll when it starts playing up, as it's much cheaper in thelong run.
