bought my first ever off roader yesterday in the shape of an E reg 90 200 mile round trip and considering she only has a 2.5td in she sat at 60/65 no problem.

From as far as I can see I think it's just abit of TLC needed on small items such as temp guage doesn’t work but I don't know where the connector is on the engine and that it clunks when letting the clutch out in every gear sounds like it's coming from the rear poss but don't know.

Oh and just one other thing when braking hard (only noticed this later) the rear wheels lock up and the front keep rolling this is the only real worrying point

so any help would be very much appriciated

Thanks

Gary

Hi, welcome to landy ownership. The coolant temp sender will be either be on top of the engine, above the inlet manifold, between two head bolts, it will (should?) have a green wire connected to it. The other place it may be is by the thermostat housing, again with a green wire hopefully attached to it. Another thing to check is the guage itself, as these seem to fail more frequently than the sender units.
As for the clunk when changing gear, this can be difficult to diagnose online. There is always some play in the drivertrain on these vehicles, and I have never found a single Defender that doesn't clunk when changing gear. There are some things you can check though. Grab hold of the rear prop, and give it a twist and wiggle, look for play in the prop UJ's and diff.
Landy maintenance and repair is usually fairly straightforward, it just requires time to do it properly, and a lot of patience.

My defender clunks something chronic when moving off ... but you soon learn to let the clutch up more gently until the slack in the drivetrain is taken up. I was seriously thinking about fitting two recon diffs to mine, but at approx £300 each I'll wait until it's really bad.

Thanks for the comments lads and yea if I feather the clutch out it doesnt clunk but will check under this evening as ~I'm back out again at 12 off roading:):):)

congratz on the landy. I'm a new owner too.. got big plans but at every turn it seems something goes wrong/needs replacing. I guess that's how it's going to be forever.
