when i did my bulkhead they shot blasted it and primed it straight away while it was still hot so the primer stuck better aparently
luckily my boy is a welder so i got some payback for a change

Sounds like a good way of doing it, always good to have a welder in the family especially if you own a landy!

Once welded up this bulkhead is possibly going back to the shotblasters to go over the new sections and the welds, they do powder coating there so he's qouted me £60 to powder coat it in deep bronze green.
 
Took a days leave today to crack on with the bulkhead. got the footwells and door pillars welded in and test fitted it on the chassis, just the welds to tidy up, then i'll take it back off and get it ready for the paint or powder coat.

Looking very good. I'm not sure what the general opinion is but I'd be a bit worried about powder coating. Corrosion sets in beneath and it not until its well established that it splits the paint and flakes off.

Ye i have heard mixed reviews about powder coating, they say its pretty hard wearing. More tempted to paint it, get plenty of red oxide onto it and build up a few top coats, but thats more for logistical reasons to save transporting it. Still the list of jobs is getting slightly shorter, might get some greenlaning in before the year is out.
 
I read something advising against it in the latest LRM magazine - not bulkhead specifically though.

Galvafroid cold galv paint might be an option to consider?
 
Think of powder coated garden furniture, where the rust is spreading all up the legs under the plastic, which then comes off in sheets. It's a terrible finish, not suitable for weather exposed metal.

Worth it in the long run did not have any issue with distortion.
 
Excellent, I'm planning on doing that. How many drain holes did you have to drill before galvanising and where did you put them?
 
Right had a bit of time cracking on with it, the rugby got in the way of my plans so didnt achieve as much as i thought but progress is progress!

Managed to finish the welding on th bulkhead and get one coat of red oxide on the engine side, finished off all brake pipework and even managed to clean up the vent adjusters and grills. roll on next weekend, hoping to get the bulkhead finished.

Re galvanising did not put any drain holes in , had not heard of that.
Door pillars have holes in there bases usually all looked to be coated when I inspected it on return .
The bulkhead rebuild took ages as top rail was rusted through and part of near side vent. The only regret I had afterwards was I could have replaced door pillars instead of the small repairs I did .Either way I think it will still be going when I am not.

cheers Blackburn, 2 coats of etch, 3 coats of hi build primer and 3 top coats of cellulose deep bronze green, all applied using a suction spray gun.
