Yup, "M & S" lights flashing up every second drive, same with the "D". How much should I expect to pay an indie Land Rover garage to replace the XYZ switch including parts and labour? The alternative is to do it myself so a) how much is the switch itself and the best place to buy it? b) Do I really need the special tool that Land Rover claim is needed. c) Is it possible to actually do the job with the average home DIY mechanics tool kit, e.g. ramps, Jack, blocks of wood, stands, etc?

Cheers

Brace yourself for this....
Switch is about £350 plus the VAT from a stealer. My local indy managed to get it down to that including the vat. No sign of pattern parts for it, and second hand ones rare too.

It is actually pretty easy to get off and back on. I set mine up using the output shown on Hawkeye to make sure it was in the right place.
I found that I had one wire chafed and shorting to the gearbox, and another starting to.

Repaired those, put the old switch back on and so far (3 weeks later) all is well.

Now hoping to get a refund on the switch.

I was lucky and used a four post ramp at the local garage, but should be eqaully possible on ramps or stands, just not as comfortable. Took me a couple of hours, inlcuding time for the wd 40 to soak in so the switch would come off the selector shaft.

Wow, £350! That's way more than I had imagined...I'll look on ebay. So if I manage to get one how much labour should I expect to pay as unfortunately don't have a Hawkeye or any other diagnostics tool ;-(

Has it been on Testbook to confirm it is the WXYZ switch at fault ? There are several other reasons for the EAT ecu to fault.

Have P38 DSE, at start up park, reverse & neutral all fine but going into drive dash display disappeared and led's on selector panel random with "Gearbox Fault" when put into 1st. Testing switch was reasonably simple and can be completed from connector going into LED selector display with multimeter. For Diesel only XY&Z leads are used and gear selection and should pull 12v from ECU down to earth (combinations from Rave CD), on mine Z lead was only being brought down between 9-10V when 'D' selected so 90% sure it was the Gear selector XYZ switch. Switch is £320 from Rimmer bought 2nd hand from "Any Part" on eBay for £85. Fitting it this way worked for me... drove passanger side wheel up on ramp to access side of gearbox, selected neutral and blocked wheels. Removed selesctor arm and marked existing switch position with line across white splined centre out to body and carefully removed switch. Lined up old & new switches using keyway, marked switch and fitted to car checking that marks still lined up. Took about an hour and half and worked perfectly.
