i filled my freelander diesel tank with unleaded petrol by mistake :( what damage have I caused to the engine?
I only drove about 500yd from the garage before the vehicle broke down with clouds of white smoke comming from the exhaust.

dont know about freelander, but my mate filled his diesel clio up with petrol, drove it for about a mile before the same result as you. he got away with just the tank drained and a few rubber seals.

i think its not so bad putting petrol in a diesel, the worst scenario is diesel into a petrol.

i would have thought that putting a volatile fuel such as petrol into a compression ignition engine would do more harm than putting a realtively thick oil into a spark ign engine. truck drivers use to put a little bit of petrol into diesel years ago to stop it freezing in winter. that was before they put additives in it to stop this happening.

as an ex roadside patrol, i used to come across this scenario on a regular basis. it doesn't do any damage as long as you drain the tank and replace all the filters then pull the diesel through before trying to start the engine. if you get in touch with the aa they will tell you of your nearest fuel drain garage. they normally charge about £130. the worst thing you can do is tell the main dealer as they put a mark on their main computer and void any warranty that you may have left. i hope this helps you.

there is a device called solodiesel. I use it and it's simple to instal plus it works. so ones who have problems with wrong fuel should use it I think...

I've just misfuelled too...... I wish I had found this forum before and taking your advice (Baukl) on the Solo Diesel device. It has just cost be £380.00 to have it all sorted out and the red faceness has limitless cost attached..... arrrrrh! - anyway just been to that Solo Diesel website and ordered the cap.

£380? who did it? main dealer?:eek::eek:

Dont forget to ask for your drained fuel back.

If you leave it to stand it will separate and you can then use the diesel in the landy and the petrol in the car.

Or you can let the garage do it for you and use it themselves:D

You are joking, right?

A warning to everyone: last week I put £20 worth of unleaded in my 6 month old diesel Freelander 2 ED4, and drove about 50 yards before realising. I switched off and then it wouldn't restart.

The vehicle was towed to my local Land Rover dealer where they inspected and said it was good news - the engine hadn't been damaged but the injectors, pumps etc would have to be replaced, and the work would take two days.

Thankfully it was a company vehicle and covered by our insurance. And the bill to the insurance company?

£7k - yes, seven thousand pounds!!!! I know this because my company had to settle the VAT portion.

If you have a common rail diesel , then you need to get it before it gets thru the whole system which is pretty much instantaneous , as it destroys the hp pump (no lube) . Had to replace a few merc pumps in OZ fitted in Jeeps
The old style pumps with piped injectors you need to drive quite a bit before it damages injectors . HTSH

if pump is damaged then fine ,but it doesnt every time otherwise the vehicles i drained wouldnt still be running fine:rolleyes: ,modern common rail is easy to drain system using lp pump

I refuelled my diesel Discovery with petrol a few years ago. Realising my mistake I did not start the engine and a friendly mechanic towed me to his garage and pumped out the petrol, which we then utilised in another motor.

I have heard that if by error you only put a small amount of petrol in a diesel tank but then fill it with diesel, that it should not cause harm or damage ? Fact or fiction?

Does the small amount of petrol mix with the diesel or does it remain separated?

fact, it mixes too much petrol will cause misfires or even non running but a little wont hurt
