Hi All,

So, are there any worth doing that don't cost an arm, leg or kidney?

I'm not looking at getting every last bit of bhp/Nm out of the lump, but just improve the drivability in general.

Friends have mentioned 'tweaking' the fuel pump, removing the centre muffler, changing the intercooler pipes for Samco items and perhaps fitting a larger intercooler.

What are your collective experiences?

Cheers,

Thanks for the help:rolleyes:

I'd already done that, you see, and found conflicting info.

Do you actually have anything of value to add:confused:

:search:

you will find the info and if you got an answer on here it would be the same as before anyway :welcome2:

Perhaps I should change the title to best value mods, then? This seemingly has not been covered from a £ per bhp perspective.

Searchs are all well and good, however information changes over time as more knowledge becomes available. Once upon a time a quill was the best writing instrument available...until Mr Biro came along;)

for best value on a 300tdi i would be looking at blanking the egr (about £15 including new intercooler hose) and a decat (about £17). you will notice a difference and pretty cheap too.

note: this was what i did to my disco but pretty sure the depender engine is the same :)

I reckon if people are unhappy that someone hasn't searched FIRST then they should just ignore the person rather than taking the time to bother saying SEARCH?

I think that sometimes new blood keeps a forum alive, otherwise a forum eventually has all questions answered and just stagnates and scares off new and potentially interesting/useful people?

I guess I am opening myself up for a flaming but I guess I could just SEARCH.....

Ta muchly.

Mt Scottish ancestry is shining thru...penny pinching and value for money rank highly.

I have blanked off the EGR and will investigate the CAT situation.

The issue with other minor mods to the 30tdi lump (the intercooler for eg) is the sheer variety available...Alisport, Allard, etc, etc. Is one really better than the others?

I'd love to find an old magazine article in one of the specialist mags!

Cheers,

If you want my advice and I'm sure a lot of people will agree, there is little you can do to a landy diesel engine that is worth doing without spending a fortune. It's not just a case of adding one part to it because the rest of the engine won't take it. The way the are set up is to be reliable.
If you really want to do something, get rid of your egr and cat and then get an exhaust with no boxes on it (same bore). You'll get a bit of extra responsiveness but don't be expecting miracles.

Fair play and thanks for the info.:)

fair comments but what part of that post was helpful to the OPs question :p

Sure i heard you can raise the boost slightly, however first tap in a boost guage to see what your actually producing. I believe its something like 0.86 bar as standard and can be raised to a bar.
But please conferm this before trying it as i will not be held responsible for you popping your turbo lol.
Only mod on mine so far was blank the egr, then i took the intercooler off, pour some thinners in it and let it burn off the oil for about an hour or so.
Really made a difference on mine, was so clogged up with oil it had lost sooo much grunt. Then replaced a blocked air filter and that really helped too lol.
Hopefully will be making a de-cat today so will let you know how that does.

Chris.

the 300 engine does respond to some very cheap/no cost modifications, mine has been transformed by doing the following;
1 removed egr valve
2 removed cat from exhaust system
3 turned up IP pump fuel delivery
4 moved the wastegate pressure tube to the inlet manifold

My 110 will now pull from no revs up the steep mountains here, it will tow my fully laden 3.5tonne Ifor Williams trailer as if its empty and still returns over 30mpg (disco transfer box fitted)

Just picked up th1 110 from Chris Bowler @ Cambrian 4X4...holt sh*t, what a difference!

EGR was already blanked off and now the fuel pump has been 'tweaked'. This, along with a good old fashioned full change of all filters and fluids has seen the 110 go from a bit of a slouch to a quick 110. The difference is really surprising.

I am keen on removing the cat, centre muffler and fitting a full size intercooler now as I reckon it will make the 110 really fly along:).

Cheers,

Update -

As a prior post has suggested, I've rid the 110 of the CAT and now only have one silencer (near the tail pipe).

The difference really is surprising. I never expected a 300tdi engine to want to rev so freely.

On top of this I've ditched the standard intercooler pipes and installed ally and samco in their place. I can now hear the turbo spool up, which will be even better when the Brunel Performance intercooler arrives.:)

Happy days!

Cheers,

C.

To increase performance you need to supply more oxygen and fuel. This is done in a number of ways:
Larger intercooler increases air density.
Free flowing air filter reducing resistance and increasing air supply.
Free flowing larger bore exhaust reduces back pressure (Turbo'd engines don't like back pressure as the turbo has to fight it).
Increase fuel supply by twerking the pump.
Increase boost to maximise the increases in air density and fuel supply.

That's pretty much it unless you plan going larger injectors, bigger turbo, ported & polished intake plenum and cylinder head.

Why ? Because the first post was over 11 years ago and the last (before yours) was almost 5 years ago ?
